Nick Diaz Moves the Needle, but He’s Retired at the Moment

Nick Diaz UFC 129UFC president Dana White has explained why he isn’t interested in renegotiating anything with Nate Diaz. He doesn’t think the Stockton lightweight is worth the investment. But Nate’s older brother, Nick, is a different story.

“Nick is a needle mover. Nick moves the needle,” said White while in Dublin for UFC Fight Night 46 on July 19.

The older of the two Diaz brothers, Nick, has arguably put together a Hall of Fame-worthy mixed martial arts career. His UFC 47 knockout of Robbie Lawler put him on the map. His Pride 33 submission-win over Takanori Gomi by gogoplata pretty much solidified his status as a legend among hardcore fans. The win was later turned into a No Contest after Diaz tested positive to marijuana following the fight.

To put the 30-year-old former Strikeforce welterweight champion’s drawing power into perspective; he was granted a UFC welterweight title fight against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158 while coming off of a loss to Carlos Condit and after a year suspension for testing positive to marijuana for the second time.

He coined the phrase, “Don’t be scared homie.” He has a cult-like following. Whether he’s complaining about driving a Honda or the organization selling “wolf tickets,” Nick Diaz generates interest, which equates to dollars.

There are big fights and large paydays out there for Diaz. The problem is, he’s retired.

“Nick’s not holding out. Nick said, ‘I’m just not going to fight for a while. I’m going to retire.’ And I think that when that’s your mindset, you need to take some time off. This isn’t baseball, or some sport where you can whatever. This is fighting. You’ve got to be all-in or all-out,” said White about the Cesar Gracie-trained fighter.

But retirement doesn’t mean that a fighter won’t fight again. Just ask Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock, or Tito Ortiz.

Diaz has always wanted marquee match-ups. Former longtime middleweight champion Anderson Silva has expressed interest in a bout with Diaz for his return fight early next year. If any bout agreement could draw Diaz out of retirement, it’s a fight against the widely considered G.O.A.T.

  • Obi-Wan Granoli

Well it’d be cool to see Anderson Silva vs Nick Diaz, that’s for sure.

    • John

I fave Anderson, but don’t let Nick land because we all know Anderson has a glass jaw and Nick can take punches.

      • Obi-Wan Granoli

isn’t anderson quite a bit bigger naturally?

      • Obi-Wan Granoli

it is going to be an exciting event for sure! this def a make one mistake and it is all over kind of fight.

  • bajafox

Care to elaborate? Why is he a junkie? Because the Federal government says marijuana is a schedule one narcotic and you’re stupid enough to believe it’s the same as doing cocaine or PCP?

    • mbunaman

Yea no s–t that was one hell of an ignorant comment I think 90’s of athletes use Cannabis and there be nothing wrong with that. Hell I think competing after smoking cannabis should not be illegal it is in no way like alcohol or any

other drug so just f— off with your ignorant comments

  • bajafox

I hope this happens, a counter striker who moves back against a counter striker who moves forward.

  • pwizo

*dabs one up for da Diaz bros..*

Boring, hope he and his brother both retire. Punks is all they are and they show no respect.

    • peralez2383

      brown pride

  • Darth

Hall of Fame!?!?!?!?!? Who has he beat besides Robbie Lawler? He’s a reality train wreck at best and unfortuanatly, people want to see train wrecks. Stay retired and good ridance to you and your “Even worse” brother.

    • TheCerealKiller

I was going to say the same thing! Beating Robbie 10 years ago is irrelevant, you were both kids! Come back and fight Robbie now. Never toughed UFC gold, but wants 500k a fight. LOL

      • wess32

Ha…I’m not a big Diaz fan…but if you had beat Lawler 10 years ago… Or anytime than you would probably feel it was relevant!

        • TheCerealKiller

If you hang your hat on something you did ten years ago, you’re not doing it right.

          • Seth

Exactly. Today’s version of Robbie would mop the floor with the version Nick Diaz beat. Let’s say that Renan Barao will become BW champion again. Does it mean that João Paulo Rodrigues de Souza has a right to call himself relevant, because he beat Renan 10 yrs ago? That would be ridiculous.

          • wess32

LOL..So Joe Montana wasn’t a good quarterback then because he wasn’t winning the SB every year until retirement? what about your past accomplishments… do they mean nothing after a certain amount of time?

          • TheCerealKiller

Diaz has beaten nobody but BJ Penn and Lawler ten years ago. Both wins mean little compared to the rest of the world of MMA.

            Are you retarded?

    • Mike

Penn, Gomi, Koons, Shamrock and just about anyone that has been put in front of him. He’s not the greatest and the guy is a dick but he is a solid fighter. Give credit where credit is due.

  • Mike

I have more respect for him that he had just failed the test for marijuana than if he had failed for steroids. It’s probably harder to fight and train if you’re baked all the time. You’re not cheating with pot. You are with testosterone.

    • Obi-Wan Granoli

yea, pot actually lowers your testosterone.

    • earlsimmons

no1 said its cheating. Everyone said its breaking the rules. Get it right you clown.

  • Seth

Is he UFC HoF-Material? No. Do I care? No. UFC wouldn’t induct him anyway, so stop burning you keyboard writing all those hate message. I couldn’t care less about Nicky, but that’s not a reason to get all worked-up over one, stupid comment that someone put in the article. Relax, take a breath, stop wasting your time on punks and enjoy those fighters that actually have balls to compete.

  • Mikey

A “real” fighter is a fighter who fights anyone, anywhere, at anytime and at any cost. Nick is a good fighter but not at the level like GSP or Anderson Silva. Organizations, like Strikeforce, has had some pretty good fighters but not at the same level like the UFC. Lately all the Diaz brothers have been doing is complaining on their contracts and $$$. It’s funny when a young fighter comes into the UFC their so thankful for the opportunity but after a while a few take for granted that opportunity that was given to them. I like the Diaz brothers but like I say, a true fighter fights.

  • Shang Hunter

JUNKIE, your name suits you very well!! educate yourself before making a highly ignorant uneducated comment as such. Little dude just so you know i would take a stab and say that 75% of ALL fighters are on some type of drug, being h.g.g. or any other p.e.ds your such a cretin…ops forgive me as i would assume you would have no clue what that word means. would you assume what i am holding is a drug as well…dumb a#$ !!

    • wess32

You are uneducated and spouting garbage you don’t know about…Pot stays in the brain for mere hours yet the chemical is detectable for 30 days. How do you know he didn’t smoke 29 days before the fight? do you actually think a triathlete would smoke 5 minutes before he performs? you are an Idiot for sure!

  • RGeezy

One of my favorite fighters to watch, win or lose.

    • Seth

More like “paid or not paid” these days…

  • Me

Nick Diaz FIGHTS. He doesn’t give a damn about points, reputation, whatever else. He wants to fight his opponent … least as far as i can tell. It costs him when it goes to a decision against a champ or any high ranking opponent for sure. But he f—in’ fights. Not many do.

    • Seth

Really? He fights? That’s a major news, worthy of a headline article. Nick Diaz fights…interesting…

    • Floyd Wilson

      • bajafox

Like when he tried to engage with the Natural Born Runner Carlos Condit but he refused cause he was a biatch

        • Seth

So people still defend Nick in that fight? That’s called “gameplan”

Nick was well known for pushin people into fence and beat the hell out of them. And that’s what he tried to do to Carlos. He tried to put his back against the fence and punch the life out of him. In your opinion, Carlos should let him do that? He knew that if he gets pushed into fence, he may lose – so he avoided being pushed to the fence. That was smart counter to the only strategy that worked for Nate Diaz. And it gave Carlos well-deserved win.

          • bajafox

            Of course not.

Now let me ask you this, do you consider someone constantly turning their back to an opponent, with the only thing keeping them within distance is the cage, not running?

There’s a fine line between strategy and straight up running from an opponent. Carlos ran

          • Seth

So yeah. If you consider that running, then you would expect him to fight Nicky’s type of fight. Which would be stupid thing to do. You go to that cage for one thing – to win. You aren’t there to entertain fans. Remember, they make living out of this. Carlos has a family, he fights to make money – and winning fights is paid more than losing. Not always you can go and bang, like he did with Dan Hardy or Hitman. If you don’t respect the better fighter and praise the loser…then I don’t think you actually understand how fighting works. Why people don’t understand that – they do NOT fight for FANS. They fight to make money and be able to secure living for them and their families.

  • RoadFC

damn it. i think nick is tired talking all day. take rest for your entire life. even when he was a fighter, he was like a girl. Bisping or Chael also talk a lot before their fight but they show sportsmanship after the fight. look at Nick. GSP dominated him. but at the press conference, nick said Gsp’s punch wasnt that hurt. Also he said Gsp’s style is so boring. then what about your best friend Jake? U wanna be at the top? wanna get the title shot or big money? then work hard like cowboy, poireir, Robbie or mcdonald. Dont just sit around and talk s***. of course you beat BJ but never say you beat Robbie anymore. even if you wanna fight Robbie you cant. hes in whole different level now.

    • Cameron

Robbie already said he doesn’t want to fight nick again. Real respects real. When Robbie was asked about a potential rematch he said “I’ve learned to let go of the past and y’all should too…”

      • Floyd Wilson

Why would Robbie waste time fighting a loser and a cheat? He won’t fight him because he has no respect for him.

The Diaz brothers are 2 bit thugs. Good riddance.

  • George

I enjoy watching MMA. I do not enjoy watching either Diaz brother. If they want to sit at home and smoke pot while complaining about their contracts I say let them. As far as contract renegotiations for Nick I say he needs to put the bong away for a while. The sport is moving along nicely without either of those guys in it.

    • Roid Rogers

Great post George, could not agree more

    • Daniel Andrews

why all the marijuana references? are you that against alcohol which is the far more destructive drug.

      • earlsimmons

thats debatable so stop spewing your liberal garbage until you show some facts you clown. You see one msnbc show and think your an expert?

        • wess32

You are ignorant if you truly believe that the statement he made is at all debatable…Ask any doctor which one is more damaging and dangerously addictive! I’ve asked plenty and they all tell me the same thing alcohol is deadlier, and far more addictive with aggressive behavioral changing side effects. They don’t prescribe booze to anyone in a hospital for anything! Pull your head out of Fox News’s A(s(s…

          • earlsimmons

Please cite where a doctor says that. Because again i asked for facts and you give me “Ive asked plenty and they tell me…” I stopped reading there because the doctors you asked must be clowns if they said that. pot hasn’t been around long enough and studied enough to say that there is less long term side effects and is less deadly that alcohol. How can you argue that when there hasn’t been any studies??? And what does prescribing it have to do with anything? Does diaz have cancer? Again keep watching your msnbc where you liberals believe whatever is spewed out.

          • wess32

So you deny facts in front of your face? hunh…you must be a religious nut!
Do you deny that doctors have prescribed Marijuana for a variety of illness? If so then you need to tour a hospital and ask some questions… My Grandmother was a lead nurse at a veterans hospital for 40 years…also my Aunt is a neurosurgeon! is that enough for you?
I have asked many questions to those with great knowledge of the medical industry and human anatomy as well as illness! I have also met a few ex Heroin addicts that used weed as a source of rehabilitation because it IS NOT as addictive as Alcohol! Look…If you want to live in blind fear then by all means take your bible, your good citizen book given to you by your political party, and hide in your room from all the scary pot heads. Since there has been 70 plus years of Marijuana use among a wide variety of people, and low and behold how many deaths are caused by it in the last 70 years or so? Oh that’s right it wouldn’t even be comparable to booze or other prescription opiates!
I wont let a small group of fear mongering extremists try to tell me something I have lived to contradict!
            Good day Sir.

          • wess32

Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a neurosurgeon and CNN’s chief medical correspondent.

“Well, I am here to apologize.

I apologize because I didn’t look hard enough, until now. I didn’t look far enough. I didn’t review papers from smaller labs in other countries doing some remarkable research, and I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis.

Instead, I lumped them with the high-visibility malingerers, just looking to get high. I mistakenly believed the Drug Enforcement Agency listed marijuana as a schedule 1 substance because of sound scientific proof. Surely, they must have quality reasoning as to why marijuana is in the category of the most dangerous drugs that have “no accepted medicinal use and a high potential for abuse.”

They didn’t have the science to support that claim, and I now know that when it comes to marijuana neither of those things are true. It doesn’t have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications. In fact, sometimes marijuana is the only thing that works. Take the case of Charlotte Figi, who I met in Colorado. She started having seizures soon after birth. By age 3, she was having 300 a week, despite being on seven different medications. Medical marijuana has calmed her brain, limiting her seizures to 2 or 3 per month.

I have seen more patients like Charlotte first hand, spent time with them and come to the realization that it is irresponsible not to provide the best care we can as a medical community, care that could involve marijuana.

We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that.

I hope this article and upcoming documentary will help set the record straight.”

            Medical facts of Marijuana

        • AXE MURDERER

As an abuser of both alcohol & ganja, I Wandy say alcohol is way worst! -__-

          • earlsimmons

so just one personal experience of some clown on an mma forum says alcohol so thats truth? LUL. I said FACTS bro. Not your opinion.

          • dandogood

            earl knows nothing

      • Floyd Wilson

Marijuana is a PED and a banned substance that the cheating Diaz brothers have been busted for.

        • Seth

Im against marijuana, but I don’t think its PED…it’s not like you smoke joint and all of the sudden you have more strenght, you hit harder or you can take more punches… .-.

          • Floyd Wilson

Cannabis reduces anxiety and pain. It is a bronchiodialator, and can increase concentration.

Regardless of your feelings he is a cheater.

          • Seth

I didn’t say it’s clean thing, but it’s not PED for sure. I’m all against any kind of drugs, including legal ones like alcohol. Especially when it comes to sports.

          • bajafox

Depends on the strain and person. Also depends on the thc, cbd and cbn levels. One person can get drunk with one beer where another can’t get drunk after 12. So to generalize that weed can do those things is incorrect

  • mma fan

The DIAZ brothers always bring it. Nick is an animal. Anyone who says they don’t like watching the Diaz brothers fight then they need to stay away from MMA completely. Will order any ppv card when the Diaz brothers are on. much respect.

    • dgs

Absolutely agree with this post. You might not like him as a person, and you might have a moral conflict with his decision to smoke marijuana, but only someone clueless about the sport would claim Nick Diaz sucks as a fighter. Nick has only lost to the best in the world, and they are usually close decision losses at that (as in his previous two fights). However, he has also beaten the best in the world too. He has an iron chin, quite possibly the most accurate boxing in the game, and his ground game (especially from his guard) is just about flawless.

Nate is also a complete stud. The ass whoopin g he put on the dorky Gray Maynard was a thing of beauty to watch. Seeing a big, dumb, cocky wrestler getting his clock cleaned by a much smaller, but far more technically skilled fighter is something I always have, and always will enjoy watching in MMA.

Hey, Dana “F—ing” White, neither of the Diaz brothers needs you, they could fight in any other organization in the world if they choose. While I would love to see them beat up on more UFC fighters, I really hope both of them give you the big middle finger and fight for another org, you don’t deserve them. It also must frustrate you to have two fighters who don’t kiss your ass, or give a crap what you think about them – unlike the rest of the fighters in the org who pretend to worship the ground you walk on so they can keep their jobs.

      • Seth

If they don’t need Dana and UFC…why won’t they ask for release and go look somewhere else? Nick said UFC “doesn’t want to pay him” when he makes his ridiculous demands about pay. Nate is currently unhappy with the contract that HE AGREED ON AND SIGNED…if they really doesn’t need UFC, why won’t they go to Viacom MMA? They would welcome them with open arms and both of them finally could become world champions somewhere, since they can’t get the job done in the UFC…too high level of competition? Or they are too high?

        • dgs

As mmalive responded a couple of posts down, they are under contract with the UFC, and can’t yet fight for another org. And yes, they signed the contracts, but people do make mistakes, and contracts are renegotiated all the time in the business world, especially if the original contract was not fair to one party or another.

The Diaz brothers put asses in the seats, Dana “F–cking” White knows that, and I seriously doubt he releases them from their contracts. Dana may be a complete tool, and it probably endlessly frustrates him that he can’t control the Diaz brothers the way he can all of the other fighters in his org (who all seem to play the game let’s see who can get their nose up Dana’s butt the farthest), but as long as they continue to generate lots of revenue, he will put up with them and not release them from their contracts, guaranteed.

Money is the ruling motivator for that bald fool, and the Diaz brothers know that. They also know their own net worth, and rightfully so, are going to make Dana pay for them to fight. I bet eventually Dana will pay Nick enough that he will fight, and I will be there to watch.

          Diaz brothers fan for life.

          • Seth

They had ALL NEGOTIATION time. Nate, his manager and his team. He started to bitch about it, when Gil got better deal – and you can’t say Gil is worth as much to the UFC as Nate Diaz. Why would UFC even want to negotiate a deal with someone who refuses to work? Nate doesn’t even want to fight. Same as Nick. And I’m sure they would get release somehow. They aren’t first and they aren’t last – there were cases where UFC granted releases to fighters. Dana said that also some time ago – why would they keep a fighter that doesn’t want to be in the UFC? They finally realized that they are not UFC world championship level fighters and they won’t be UFC champions, so they try to whine and complain their way to bigger money. Nothing more.

They made bad decision? And they probably didn’t even know, right? UFC gave Nate pen, blindfolded him and said “sign it”. Come on, Nate is either dumbest fighter alive and signed a deal which HE NEGOTIATED with the UFC and didn’t even know what’s in it, or he’s just little 209 bi***, thinking he is one of the big dogs and thinking he can get away with something that TOP 3 lightweight in the world did. He should realize that he will make as much money as HE agreed on, or will make nothing. UFC offered him fights – he turned them down. It’s his fault that he can’t make money at this point.

    • earlsimmons

Ya i dont like watching them fight and they are one of the reasons I stopped buying ppv and stopped watching mma.

    • Manuel Lopez

well said and I fully agree!

    • Floyd Wilson

I love watching them get KTFO and then cry about how they are quitting.

      • bajafox

You mean all ONE time that it’s happened between the two? LOL WAFJ

        • Floyd Wilson

I guess you don’t watch very often. They quit after every defeat which has been over a dozen times.

          • bajafox

I guess your understanding of the English language isn’t that well, you specifically said KTFO not QUIT. So you love all of the one time(s) they’ve been KTFO lol

  • kale

Speaking of hof.. frank shamrock needs to be in it

  • Wallace Ordoyne

Both Diaz brothers can stay retired. Life in the UFC goes on.

  • Floyd Wilson

The only needle he moves is a drug needle.

  • jimmy777

One of my all time dream fights to see would be nick vs Anderson, both are cocky, both talk trash in the cage, both are standup fighters, both have an unusual way of fighting etc it would be the fight to see, MAKE IT HAPPEN DANA!!!!!!!

  • Hugh Shakeshaft

  • otto

Sorry guys, love watching the diaz bro’s fight, guess u dont remember Nate totally tooling Cerrone, and Nick is great to watch IMO, who gives a crap what any of these fighters do on thier own time, would love to see Connor vs Nate….and Nick vs anyone, loves what he brings to the octogon, im only interested in what these guys do in the ring, outside the ring, most of these guys will dissapoint u……..war Diaz bro’s, fight on

  • mmalive

Nick, hold out until Uncle Dana PAYS you what your worth.

He will make money off you and you should make money off UFC.

The Diaz brothers add some spice to the UFC. Makes it interesting to tune in.

Both guys antics whether inside or outside cage make it nice to watch.

Nick’s is worth more than Nate for sure.

They are generating buzz so there is still interest for these guys.

The reason both brothers are not in other organizations is that they are under contract with UFC,

Uncle Dana and Zuffa brass would sue the for breach of

Keep on smoking that weed guys. Just make sure you guys clean your system before and after fights,

    War on Stockton sons.

    • Darin

If he holds out for pay commensurate with what he thinks he’s worth, he’ll be too old to be relevant.

Nick actually made a comment after losing to GSP that the UFC paid him TOO MUCH, which made it more likely he’d take time off rather than train for another fight.

Nick and his brother are simply stupid, angry….possibly brain damaged. They don’t know what they want, they just know they’re mad.

      • mmalive

Darin, The only stupid one is you.

Your comment was so stupid it made me laugh.

Let me get into details so your pea brain can hopefully absorb it.

        How are both brothers irrelevant?

Both have defined MMA skills that can be fine tuned anytime for a match

Would any logical hard working person want to be under paid? NO WAY.

Only the dumb people work underpaid because they at desperate for cash.

Diaz bothers on the contrary are quite smart by making sure they paid full value.

Maybe smoking all that weed helped. LOL.

War On Diaz Brothers of Stockton 209.

  • TheCerealKiller

    There you go.

  • dandogood

Nick Diaz is a low life unworthy of being in the UFC. Ignore this disease and blight on MMA and move away from this cursed son of satan. Nick Diaz should be banned from the UFC.

    • mmalibe

Not before he beats your A$$ guy.

Try making any of those bold comments face to face with Nick.

I would pay per view and tune it for that SURELY YEAH!!!

      • dandogood

that skinny dope smoking 150lb Nick son of satan ain’t beating anyone.

  • dandogood

Nick Diaz couldn’t even beat carlos Condit?

  • dandogood
