With the UFC looking to spread its wings, bringing shows to more and more countries, UFC Director of Operations for Australia, New Zealand & Canada Tom Wright has revealed that they are targeting their debut show in New Zealand with the Vector Arena in Auckland. It won’t, however, be until at least 2015.
“I was in Auckland two days ago. I went to the Vector Arena, which is a potential place we would go there,” Wright told MMAKanvas. “I met with some officials from the New Zealand Mixed-Martial Arts Association and I had a chance to get a better sense for Auckland, and we’d love to go there.”
With Mark Hunt, James TeHuna and Dylan Andrews all born in New Zealand, the country is crying out for a show, and according to Wright, it’s a strong market for the promotion.
“We know it’s a strong market for us. Auckland would be the first place we go to,” Wright continued. “We’re very excited about that opportunity. It wouldn’t be until probably 2015 or 2016, but Auckland is absolutely on our radar.
“We’ve got some great Kiwi fighters, Mark Hunt is born in New Zealand, James Te Huna is from New Zealand, and I’d love to see it happen.”
While Auckland would likely be the first place that the UFC visits in New Zealand, Wright admits there’s work to do with the government in the country’s capital, Wellington.
“I still have to go to Wellington,” he admitted. “We’ve got some work to do with the Government there.”
