UFC 116 in Las Vegas is a card that’s filling up quickly as another bout has been confirmed for the July 3 card that will pit top ten middleweight Nate Marquardt against American Top Team fighter Alessio Sakara.
The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Monday by sources close to the fight.
On a run to get a rematch with middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Nate Marquardt (29-9-2) ran into Chael Sonnen in his last fight and came up short against the Team Quest fighter, losing a unanimous decision in February. Prior to that fight, Marquardt had looked virtually unstoppable, winning his previous three bouts by KO or TKO including a :21 second drubbing of Demian Maia.
Now looking to get back in the middleweight title picture, Marquardt will face one of the UFC’s toughest strikers, who is trying to keep his winning streak alive.
Alessio Sakara (15-7) has had an up and down career in the UFC, but no one can doubt the Italian fighter’s will to go out and make an exciting fight. Since joining up with the Florida based American Top Team, he has improved a lot of the holes in his game, and has won three fights in a row.
Most recently, Sakara tagged James Irvin with a punch that stunned the former light heavyweight and while some controversy ensued, it was a stoppage and a TKO win for the middleweight fighter.
There has been no official announcement about UFC 116 in Las Vegas, or if Marquardt vs. Sakara will make the main televised card or not. MMAWeekly.com will have more information about the card as it becomes available.
