Nate Diaz Rants About Unfair UFC Deal, Wants Contract Release: “Right Now, I’m Broke”

Nate DiazDespite having signed a new contract about a year ago – a contract that UFC president Dana White claims his fighter was more than happy about at the time – Nate Diaz has recently been making waves, speaking out about the “funny money” that he’s being paid. He’s even gone so far as saying the UFC needs to renegotiate his contract or grant his release.

Diaz unloaded on MMAFighting.com on Tuesday, heavily criticizing the UFC for what he gets paid, particularly relative to other fighters, including his some of his teammates.

“They need to be about more money. My contract is all (expletive) up,” Diaz told MMAFighting. “I want to be paid like these other fighters. I’m over here getting chump change. At this point, they’re paying all my partners and other people I train with are getting real money, and it’s too embarrassing for me to even fight again for the money they’re paying me. So they can either pay me or let me go. I’m with that.”

Diaz previously made his request to be released via what seems to be MMA’s most popular tool of business of late… Twitter.

White at the time shot down the idea of hashing things out via Twitter, and questioned Diaz’s sudden complaints about his contract after having lost back-to-back fights to Benson Henderson and Josh Thomson before scoring a TKO stoppage of Gray Maynard last November.

To Diaz, however, it makes sense, and he pleaded his case on Tuesday.

“I train harder than everybody in the UFC. And then there’s boxers out there getting multimillion dollar contracts, and I’m a bigger draw than boxers. It’s embarrassing. I think I’m the biggest draw in the lightweight division.

“I don’t have anything but bitter (expletive) to say,” he continued. “We’re entertaining entertainers. We get Shaq, Justin Bieber and Lil’ Jon at the show. How are we entertaining billionaires and we can’t even get (expletive)?

“My partners still make (expletive) money for what the company is bringing in. They’re happy because they’re not getting paid what they used to get paid, so they get little chunks to shut up. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t get paid (expletive). I get $60,000 (to show) and $60,000 (to win).”

And as long as he’s complaining and not stepping into the Octagon, White says Diaz will get nothing.

“He comes off a win over Gray Maynard and feels like he should be making Justin Bieber money. Nate needs to get back in there and start fighting, win fights again and earn a title shot again,” White told MMAFighting.com.

“Guess how much money he makes sitting at home? Zero. Get back to work, Nate.”

In Diaz’s world, however, he’s the low man on the totem pole, believing that everyone but him is being shown the money. He seems to feel that a re-negotiation is in order, either that, or being released from the UFC would resolve his issues.

“The crazy thing to me is that in what other professional sport do the cheerleaders make more than the athletes? I’m sure Arianny Celeste, Brittney Palmer, Joe Rogan, Bruce Buffer, probably (reporter Ariel Helwani), everybody makes more money than I do,” he raved.

“If I can get released, I can go fight somewhere and make some money,” he said. “If they can renegotiate, I can make some money, because right now I’m broke.”

These guys are so annoying. Just go away already. If you were stupid enough to sign a bad contract, live with it and fight it out. Or even better, just retire and go away.

    • Mark McDowall

AMEN!! Complain to your manager for being a bad negotiator…

  • DiazBrosSuck

He gets 60k to show up and 60k if he wins, what else does he want? That’s better compared to the 20k he used to get before signing his new contract. Go fock a goat Nate, you and your bro. both!

  • Mark McDowall

So if he fights twice a year…he makes minimum 120k…minus all the expenses he has…he’ll come out with what…$60-70k?? If your making that kind of money and your still broke your an idiot. Like Dana said…get back to work…at least guys like Cerone admit their broke and want to fight as much as possible to make more money…

He trains harder than anyone in the UFC….and he’s the biggest draw in the light weight division?!?!?! I can tell you why he’s broke…he’s spending all his money on hallucinogenic drugs!!!!!!

    • HooahJuice

I agree with what you are saying but your grammar is bad. Cannot call someone an idiot when basic English is not…being used.

      • TheCerealKiller

Yeah, how dare you Mark! You offended HooahJuice…

        • HooahJuice

“Your an idiot” See where it is the pot calling the kettle black? If not…you are a lost cause

        • HooahJuice

          Yes…yes he did

  • AXE MURDERER

LOL, Ok go fight the winner of Alvarez Chandler #3 in bellator or the winner of Gaethje vs Newell in wsof o_O

  • jrcr_15

The guy clearly isn’t even smart enough to work at Burger King. He should be happy that he is being paid what he is being paid. I say give him what he wants and release him. He’s an idiot and bad for the sport.

  • DAVID LEWINGTON

The guy comes off two losses and we all know that lately the third loss would NOT be good for Nate. Then he wins ONE fight and thinks he’s being underpaid. Seriously, he signed his new contract and was happy with it at that point, the Diaz Brothers are always talking about they don’t play games, sell Wolf tickets and Blah, blah blah!!! Well Nate Diaz BE A MAN OF YOUR WORD !! You signed a deal now honor it.

IF Nate had of taken the fight offered to him a few months back he would have fought by now and would have 60 or 120K in the bank plus whatever bonus he may have won for performance of the night (he has won a bunch) another 50k and whatever other bonuses are worked into his contract that are undisclosed amounts. Possibly getting him over the 200K mark. Not to mention he could be possibly be working on getting another fight farther up the ladder towards another title shot, where the BIG MONEY is.

How does Nate not understand that he is a fighter and to get paid he has to fight? All the crap talk and the grass is greener over yonder talk isn’t going to put food on the table. Just like his brother who thinks he deserves a title shot if he comes back after being “RETIRED” since the GSP loss. It’s been awhile since he’s fought he needs to get back in the Octagon and prove his worth, win and work his way back to another shot for the belt. Time has finally come where there are more people writing comments on here against the Diaz Brothers and their rantings. Fans have had enough of the BS and it’s starting to show.

  • TheCerealKiller

You’re averaging three fights a year and you should always win(because you’re the best, just ask you) so that works out to $360,000 a year. You poor ignorant pothead. My heart pumps piss for you.

    • Gary Fredericks

That’s about $216,000 after income tax IF HE WON ALL THREE FIGHTS…then his management takes their chunk and he has his camp to pay for. He whent 1-2 last year which is $240,000 before tax/$120,000 after tax. That is really nothing at all considering the life ANY UFC caliber fighter lives for his/her job.

      • TheCerealKiller

Oh boy, I pay taxes too. Nobody ever asks how much you make AFTER taxes. You also don’t understand taxes. Federal tax on $240,000 is about $65,000, go look it up online. I have expenses too. I own a car and have to pay for gas. Nate couldn’t drive, he’s always high.

In the end, he could always get a 9-5 and make $50,000 like a lot of us. Oh wait, he might not even be qualified to work at Taco Bell.

        • DamianCross

I’m literally about to do Nate Diaz’s taxes:
Nate lives in Cali and his company is in Vegas, so he gets double taxed. That means the tax he pays out of Vegas is a write off for the tax he pays in Cali.
Then he’s gotta pay hundreds of thousands of whatever to his gym/manager, who supplies his fight credentials (black belt in gracie jiu jitsu and all that). That means everything he pays Caesar Gracie could be written off as a business expense if he was an independent contractor…oh wait, he TOTALLY IS! Every UFC fighter is! If Nate has half a brain, taxes are NOT that big of a problem.

      • Ran

        He’s being taxed 50%!!!??? I don’t know about that.

  • Juicy J

Maybe if he didn’t wet the bed in his title fight, he’d be making more. I’m tired of these Marxist comments from fighters saying they don’t get paid what the others are getting paid. Nate’s income is solely a reflection of him as a fighter. Pretty good pay for a mediocre fighter who can barely speak English and would not be able to secure any other type of job.

  • Joe Dog

Nate Diaz is mildly to moderately retarded.

    • Gary Fredericks

Punchy. That is the word I would have used. He and Nick have scrambled eggs between their ears.

I fear the Diaz Bros. saga will not end well. Look at many boxers that ran into money/IRS troubles and tarnished their careers. Joe Louis and Mike Tyson come to mind.

  • diazfan209

I enjoy watching Nate compete, but this kinda bothers me. Only because he has the words, “And I will never give a f#^$” on his twitter page. You can’t not give a f#^$ and the go complain about something…….

He does have a point though. Considering a quarter million people follow him on twitter, there’s definitely a larger market and draw for him compared to most other UFC fighters.

Even if 90% of the draw are haters that want him to lose, he’s still a strong draw and deserves more than 60k/60kwb per fight camp.

  • Kyle Rayner

I’m sure he’s being offered better deals elsewhere.

    • TheCerealKiller

I hope this was sarcasm. Nobody else is going to offer him a chance to make 200k per fight(with fight bonus)

      Rousimar Palhares ($25,000 + $25,000 = $50,000) WSoF

      Vitaly Minakov ($17,500 + $17,500 = $35,000) current champ
      Cheick Kongo ($50,000) Bellator

      • Kyle Rayner

And none of them have the star power Nate has. If Nate were to go somewhere else, there is a huge chance he will become champ and equals more pay. If you don’t think these other organizations would pay Nick more than the UFC is trying to pay him RIGHT NOW, then you’re insane.

        • TheCerealKiller

          Nate doesn’t have “star power”.

          • Kyle Rayner

The last two words in my previous post says it all.

  • Shocked_n_Awed

Guys working the line in the auto plant are making cars for business owners… girls working the grill at McDonalds are serving burgers to millionaires too. Just because he ‘entertains entertainers’ doesn’t mean s–t.

And, let me get this straight – he gets $60k to show, and $60k win-bonus, and could easily go four to five times a year… so that’s a potential $600,000 a year. And that’s not enough? And, unless Dana held a gun to his head along with the pen, why’d he sign the deal if it was so damn unfair.

Greedy little f–k. Greedy, not-that-talented, uneducated, troll-faced, little f–k. I hope Dana puts him in the unemployment line, and lets him taste real life for a while.

  • MuayThaiFood

He’s so broke all he can’t afford to go to work….that makes perfect sense to me.

  • snapdad

even if he was making more $$$, he would still be broke. learn how to manage your money, scumbag

  • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

60/60 is still higher than any other mma org that would pay him. And comparing himself to boxing is stupid, NO ONE in mma makes boxers money cause Dana makes sure the boxing paydays will never be in mma, thats why he bought out PRIDE

    • JDMMA

Question: If boxer pay is higher than MMA fighters then WHY do so many Boxers becoming MMA fighters? even 8 divison champs !!!

      • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

Uhhhh , do you see Floyd Matherweather talking about joiing mma?

  • uncle

His child support must of went up

  • battle ready

He should be thrilled to make what he makes. He indeed has limited options and is currently taking advantage of his best option. He could always collect trash in Stockton. (No disrespect meant for the sanitation people)

    • julian moran

      Why should he be thrilled?

  • Rousey-Diaz

I think that the problem is Nate himself, he doesn’t know how to manage money and probably spends it all away.

  • The snake

He makes more money than me with the win over Maynard in one night than I do in year working 50 to 80 hours a week. I’m not broke. I’m not rich but I’m comfortable. What does he spend his money on? Whiny little punk.

    • julian moran

Are you a UFC fighter? If not, why compare your pay to his?

You have people all over the world working 12 hour days for 3 dollars a week. So should Dana be justified by paying Diaz 5 dollars a fight?

Maybe when you wrote “Whiny little punk.” you were talking about yourself?

      • The snake

i’m a whiny little punk for stating I’m comfortable with the money I make? Also who are you defending? Nate or Dana? Or both? And why compare what people make all over the world to Nates pay after giving me shit for doing the same? You’ve contradicted yourself in every statement you made

        • julian moran

No, just for ranting about how, what is good enough for you should be good enough for Diaz.
I used third world country pay as an example to illustrate how dumb it is to compare your pay when you have completely different jobs.

          • Mr Bubbles

Listen. The Diaz brothers are two of the best fighters in the world. But don’t try and defend them and act like they’re not two of the stupidest fighters either. Maybe they are underpaid. But asking for chuck Liddell show up money is insane. Asking for a third title shot in a row after retirement is insane. Liddell helped the sport to where it is today. They did not.

  • julian moran

Nate Diaz always comes to fight and has been fighting some of the best in the division.
He lost a title fight to Benson Henderson (ranked number 1 at the time), then lost to Josh Thompson (who was top 5),to rebound by beating Grey Maynard (a past title contender) and he is still being paid chump change?
I remember him getting $12,000 to fight not too long ago. Such pay is an insult to the sport of MMA. Nate Diaz is the most underpaid fighter in the UFC.. then you have people defending this outrage because.. they are Diaz haters.

  • Innovator

He should not have signed the contract if he didn’t like the money. The UFC also does not need him so he has zero leverage to push for a negotiation. His only option is to continually bitch and moan and hope the UFC gets sick of it and just gives him more money or releases him so he shuts up which I think he sees now.
