Nate Diaz Asks Dana White, UFC for Release

February 26, 2014

Nate DiazUFC lightweight Nate Diaz on Wednesday inexplicably asked for his release from the promotion.

No reason was given for his request other than Diaz directing it towards the UFC and Dana White via his Twitter account and commenting, “It’s about time for me to be on my way,” followed by a question mark.

Diaz has made a strong run since returning to lightweight at UFC 135 in 2011. He won three consecutive bouts, but failed in his attempt to win the lightweight championship from Benson Henderson in December of 2012.

He followed the loss to Henderson with a loss to Josh Thomson, but then rebounded with a victory over Gray Maynard this past November.

Diaz has been on the sidelines ever since. He campaigned for a shot at Anthony Pettis, but was instead asked to fight undefeated Russian lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Diaz asked for undisclosed concessions from the UFC in order to fight Nurmagomedov and the fight never came together.

Now it appears Diaz, if his request is honored, may not make his way back to the Octagon to fight anyone.

Diaz’s manager, Mike Kogan, had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication, but told FoxSports.com that he was unaware of his client’s request.

Neither Dana White nor other UFC officials had commented on Diaz’s request at the time of publication.

But I thought you weren’t running from Nurmagomedov. Good riddance 209.

    • Bouncer

disagreeing with a contract doesn’t mean you’re running from a fight. they probably offered him $5k to show 5k to win.

      • gnodeb

What is the point of signing contract if you are disagreeing with it between every two fights?

      • MuayThaiFood

5k to show 5k to win? Are you serious? Diaz ranks #29 in disclosed career earnings. This doesn’t include sponsorships or PPV money. He comes in ahead of Carlos Condit and Urijah Faber and I don’t hear them whining.

        • Jimmy Rebel

Nate is also the #3 overall earner of post fight bonuses. note EARNER. he doesn’t get paid enough to actually fight. his money comes from putting on a good show. he doesn’t complain about that, he complains about what they offer him to fight. I doubt Urijah Faber would complain considering he already comes from a rich family.

  • Tim

I agree, idiots yet excellent fighters

    • Piotr

They are mediocre fighters at best.

  • DamianCross

Nothing inexplicable about it. He saw that it got Melendez more money and now he’s doing the same thing.

  • HooahJuice

    Sweet!

  • Mike Hauben

What a professional way to ask to be released….

  • Komasquin A.Lopez jr.

All you f— bag on a good fighter for his own life, but do you step into that cage? 98% of you don’t you only watch it and talk s–t. If he wants to go then he should be allowed. He’s no slave.

    • Name

So only those who “step into that cage” can speak their minds about it? Do you have to be a politician to talk politics? A physician to talk medicine? A Belibier to talk bieber?

      • gnodeb

Actually, that approach make sense :) We all know how stupid people sounds when they are talking about something that we know better (because we are doing it for living).

That is how worthless are our opinions here…

        • MuayThaiFood

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. These guys all have managers making decisions for them. Do you think they are all fighters? Just because these guys know how to fight doesn’t mean they know how to manage their careers and lives.

    • taylor2008

Yes I talk shit about him because he and his brothers are disrespecting pot smoking punks.
And yes I did step in the cage 3 times in my mid to late 30s. 3-0. I am now 48. I also did several kickboxing tourneys. Undefeated.
I agree he is no slave. Nobody is. He can do what he wants. Thats why I say good riddance to him.

      • Jason Brown

somebody needs to grow up ^^^^ no one cares about you taylor.. but I am sure you are your own personal superhero… next post I’m sure you will also brag about how big your d— is.

        • taylor2008

Jason maybe if you had some brains in your head you would have read that I was attacked for calling Nate a pot smoker. When I did that someone said what have i accomplished in life since Nate was a pro fighter. If someone is going to attack me for no reason I will throw out the facts. It wasnt bragging but if someone is going rto call me out….I will ablige. So get a clue.

          • Jason Brown

I’ve got a clue… You seem to be awful uptight & aggro. Are you roided out?? You sir, should be a pot smoker. It would mellow your narcissistic ass out.

          • taylor2008

No you dont. You are a little kid goofing around on a big boys forum. I didnt attack anyone until I was attacked for no reason. Bering the little kid you are you dont get this. If I wasnt attacked….I wouldnt have said what I said. I dont go around attacking people for fun.
You are nothing but a little kid causing trouble on a big boys forum. Go away little one. You are boring. Go play with your WWE dolls.

          • taylor2008

You now proved you are a little kid with your punk comment. Go back to playing with your WWE dolls little girl.

      • Brent

        Pot???? Where??
        Taylor2008 – Can I get your autograph?

        • taylor2008

Make sense when you post BRent.

      • anonmoose

“I agree he is no slave. Nobody is.” Again more ignorance!

      • sevendays7

Wow I’m sick of hearing how cool taylor is in all his posts….and how ignorant he is of marijuana. Every Fighter, Football player, and head trauma victim should use marijuana, as it can reduce brain swelling and help protect the brain after trauma. Our government claims marijuana has no medical use…but our government actually owns medical patents on compounds derived from marijuana. Marijuana is a safer alternative to alcohol and many drugs both over the counter prescription or otherwise. Marijuana is the safer choice hands down and it is no wonder that athletes, who are looking for the healthiest way to medicate or just blow off steam, are turning to marijuana. Marijuana is not what we were told it was in school.

        • earlsimmons

Please prove to me that pot is safer than OTC drugs. Please prove it can reduce brain swelling. Please prove our government owns patents. Without evidence all you say is garbage bro. Or am I suppose to believe you since your posting this stuff on an MMA forum LUL.

          • David

Translation: Please do my research for me, I don’t want to do a google search.

          • earlsimmons

Cant take away from my pron time bro.

          • anonmoose

I’ve seen some American tv adverts – which offer cash compensation for people who have suffered adverse effects from OTC DRUGS. Pharmacuticle industry makes billions selling drugs. Pot can heal and help a multitude of illnesses and chronic problems and guess what – grow it in your own home with little effort. You can eat it, wear it, write on it…list is endless…/end rant

          • earlsimmons

Ya ive seen tv adverts for cash compensation when slipping on ice bro. People sue for EVERYTHING so that means nothing at all. Again you telling me pot can heal and do all this garbage with no evidence so sounds to me like you got fed a bunch of bull and are now spewing it out like you know what your talking about.

          • sevendays7

Watch Sanjay Gupta’s documentary on CNN. I don’t have to prove anything. The science is coming out now that some states and countries have relaxed marijuana laws. It is safer but no need to take my word for it.

          • sevendays7

Plus it’s super easy to prove pot is safer than OTC drugs. Products like Tylenol with acetaminophen cause up to 450 deaths a year from acute liver failure. Pot has never killed anyone.

          • earlsimmons

Pot NEVER killenyone LUL. Thanks fort he laugh broseph. You just proved my point that you people have NO clue wtf your talking about.

          • sevendays7

WTF are you talking about. Do you have proof that it’s ever killed anyone. Do you have any proof at all that pot is bad for you….no your just talking shit….and proving your ignorance.

        • taylor2008

Who said I was talking about myself being cool? GEt a clue. I had some douchebag tell me what have I accomplished since Nate was a pro fighter. I said what I have done. End of story.
I am all for marijuana if it can help a medical condition. And I agree it is safer than alcohol. When you abuse it like the Diaz brothers its still like drinking too much alcohol.

          • sevendays7

Sorry I may have taken an unnecessary swipe at you. Your comments just caught me wrong I think. I do have to disagree with your very last comment though. “When you abuse it like the Diaz brothers it’s still like drinking to much alcohol” Even when abused, marijuana is still safer than alcohol. Alcohol abuse damages the liver and kills brain cells. Marijuana has no negative effects on internal organs and actually protects brain cells from damage. In fact marijuana can reduce the number of brain cells you kill when drinking alcohol. I would also just like to point out that Nate Diaz has never tested positive for marijuana before a fight. His brother has tested hot twice, but Nate never has. There are a lot of people claiming on here that he is a pot abuser….if he is such an abuser you would think he would have at least one slip up and pee hot.

        • Ryan thompson

Wow I’m sick of your rambling on about weed.
Not every person as to agree with you a–hole.

          • sevendays7

wow I’m sick of beer swilling…pill popping assholes looking down on people who choose a safer natural alternative. Your sick of me talking about weed….well I’m sick of being lied to about weed by the government….I’m sick of people being persecuted for a healthier choice….i’m sick of seeing our tax dollars wasted locking up non violent offenders….I’m sick of people spouting untrue drug war propaganda….Frankly I’m sick of talking about it too, but as long as they continue to lock people up…I will continue to fight and raise my voice against the injustice.

  • Timbo slice

I’m not here to bash the Diaz brothers cuz they always bring the fight to there opponent but it seems like he’s not happy with his pay and now wants out. I understand a little bit but he said the contract and should respect that. Finish out your contract, put up a couple of wins and get the money you deserve. Cuz personally it comes off as a bad business move in the sense that if he’s not taking this contract serious why would he anywhere else. Do the right thing Nate and kick some ass in the ufc’s lightweight division and you’ll get yours.

    • Ryan thompson

      Stop thinking so rationally,
You’re on a mma website and that kinda commonsense doesn’t fly here. Just look at Komasquin A.Lopez jr.

  • bostonjuddie

The Diaz brothers talk like they have an education of a 4th grader. I don’t blame Nate for trying to get more money. When he is done fighting he will probably living in a double wide. Dumb as a stump.

  • clarenceT

Sad really. Two gifted fighters. Not great but good…addicted to pot… Making stupid choices….idiotic managers stealing from them…once they are out if the fight game you’ll probably hear of them knocking over liquor stores .
Both bro’s will be broke soon after their done fighting for money.
I really thought Nick would pull it together ..make some money…
Teach his Lil bro to make good decisions by now. Too bad.

    • Bouncer

they’re not addicted to marijuana where are you getting this information? they’re both doing just fine.

    • David

The perception of weed here is hilarious. The PSA’s from the previous century really are sticking with some of you guys.

  • taylor2008

Dont let the door hit you on the way out you pot smoker.

    • fsunoles10

pot smoker? really? thats your insult? haha

      • taylor2008

Why was I supposed to say soemthing to impress you? haha

        • Brent

          Pot???? Where?

    • taylor’s dad

So Diaz smokes pot and is successful professional athlete despite coming from a background that you’d expect from your least favorite McDonald’s employee. Whereas you, mister judgmental, don’t enjoy pot, and are an internet troll lacking any comparable accomplishments.

      • taylor2008

No I dont have any accomplishments. I just have a seafood import business and part owner of a fairly big real estate office. At 48 my home has been paid off. Nope….no accomplishments here.

        • anonmoose

“You pot smoker” …You know that’s hilarious coming from 48year old, supposed owner of a seafood business etc.. Being alive almost half a f–king century and you’re still as ignorant as every other sheep out there. Let me guess, go to church on Sundays too?

          • earlsimmons

Yes calling people ignorant and sheep with no supporting evidence makes you sound EXTREMELY intelligent.

          • David

His view on marijuana is a solid foundation of ignorance.

          • anonmoose

You, just as dumb as the other guy. He is ignorant of pot, he sees Diaz as a “pot smoker” so i wonder how he sees other pot smokers? Having to state his job and his age, trying to reinforce his perspective, making it seem more legit, as if your age and occupation counts to how much truth you speak. Care for any more retorts? Do you see what I mean?

          • Ryan thompson

            Great retort dude!
You should do all the pro marijuana smokers a favor and shut up.

          • anonmoose

            By not spreading awareness?

  • uncle

Nate is trying Gilbert’s tactics, its not going to work for
    him

    • Bouncer

the diaz brothers truly are the epitome of fighters not being paid enough. they have massive PPV draws, they always put on exciting fights, but they get paid in coupons. it’s ridiculous.

      • Ryan thompson

Do you have numbers that show Nate being a huge PPV draw?

        • sevendays7

I know I buy all the Diaz Fights….Nate and Nick

          • earlsimmons

I stopped watching because of them. What now bro?

          • Ryan thompson

            Well then, I stand corrected.
You buy every ppv they’re on,so that makes them “massive ppv draws”.

        • Jimmy Rebel

dana white releases the gate and PPV statistics in every post fight conference. the statistics aren’t a hidden artifact. if you want them, google it. nobody’s going to babysit you.

          • Ryan thompson

Hey stupid, if you look above you’ll see I was asking Moose to prove his statement that Nate is a “massive ppv draw”.
He can’t because Nate isn’t a massive ppv draw.
I think you know this already though and are just trying too be a smart ass.

The reason I call you stupid is the stupid look on your face in the picture, and just in case that’s not you I’ll point to your comment bellow as proof.

            Post script,
Nobody takes a grown man with hair like that serious.

    • Wolf Ticket

Why do you think so? If he is released from UFC, I think UFC has no matching rights.

That matching clause was the key for Melendez, because Bellator knew a smaller contract would easily be matched by UFC and a higher is still a win for them, because it makes Dana pay more.

If Nate signs with Bellator, it’s a done deal, UFC cannot do $#^t about it, so no reason for Bellator to offer so much. He might be going for a higher payday fighting lesser competition, but it is not Gilbert’s tactics.

  • The wizard

To all you Diaz haters ……these are elite fighters fighting in the most elite organization. They get paid shit for being top athletes. Dana white is a super rich greedy ass don king. You guys aren’t true fans. Also if you watch that gsp vs hendricks fight sober you’ll realize GSP won that shit. Bitches!!!!

    • Bouncer

man you had me until the GSP comment. GSP lost that fight. it’s all about that first round, which hendricks won. I’m completely unbiased in the situation I’m more of a GSP fan than a hendricks fan anyway, but he lost that fight. not only did he lose the professional bout, he lost the fight.

    • Ryan thompson

If you want to speak like a moron we’ll send you to slip and fall school.

    • earlsimmons

      Troll much?

  • Mark McDowall

Adios!!! Take your brother and the rest of your worthless camp with you!! You can leave Shields…he actually has a decent run going…but please leave asap!!

  • ufc loss viacom gain

love nate diaz fighting style guy brings it… but bad move no way ufc pays him after melendez they cant or everyfighter on the roster will follow suit… good luck in bellator might actually buy a ppv from them if they get a cple more decent fighters

  • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

Being a successful fighter in the UFC is not only about being talented in the cage but being a smart businessman and employee as well. Keep your mouth shut if your going to whine but be aggressive when asking for top fights. Take whatever fight is given to you and I’m sure the money will come alone the way. Dana and Lorenzo are running a business, their not going to fold to every fighters demand for more money and their not going to take money out of their own pockets, Yea your going to lose some fights eventually, it happens, especially at this level but guys like Matt Hughes, Rich Franklin, Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin must have done something right when it comes to being on good terms with the company.

    • Mark McDowall

You rarely hear about other fighters and managers and camps having issues with the UFC. But it’s rare that you don’t hear of issues coming from that whole Ceaser Grace camp. I think Dana will tell Nate your either fighting Khabib or your out.

      • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

A guy like Nate has been around a while now and taken many fights in the UFC. I can understand him wanting a full camp to fight a guy like Khabib especially when a win over him can put him in title contention but he should be lucky to be asked to fight Khabib. That’s a compliment to be asked to fight that guy and maybe he should just fight him based on more then money. Who else could he beat right now and get a title shot based on.

  • viacomneos diaz

wander if ufc will release him or make him fight it out in try to keep him he one of the biggest draws in the div….

    • Ryan thompson

      What?

    • Ryan thompson

      Charlie Kelly?

  • Shawnw

Who can blame Diaz; he is getting absolutely hosed by his current UFC contract. His base pay is on par with a mid-level UFC fighter in his 2nd year. Dana can talk about all of this “secret money” he pays his guys, but there is absolutely no excuse for Diaz’s base salary. His final fight in the UFC should be with his manager or Dana.

    • TheCerealKiller

He IS a mid-level fighter. Go look at his record.

      • Aimed With “V”

I wonder, can a fighter be both a top and mid-level?
Because according to you, that’s the case.

I look at his record and I see in his last fights:
        two wins over then-top 10 fighters;
        two losses to top 10 fighters;
one win over then -top 10 fighter.
        What’s the problem with this?

        • earlsimmons

Nothing is wrong with it. It sounds like a MID level fighter thats all.

          • Aimed With “V”

beating tops, losing to tops – mid level fighter?

Hmmm…who is NOT a mid level fighter in your book?
            Champions?

I hop you understand yourself that you make no sense at all.

          • allansm

Yes, he’s a mid-level fighter that recently fought for the belt and has consistently fought the very best in the world. Won some, lost some.

It’s unfortunate even the idiots here have a forum to voice their baseless opinions.

          • earlsimmons

So losing to top competition makes hima great fighter? Seems to me like being considered a top fighter you must BEAT the top which he hasnt. Not that hard to understand

          • Aimed With “V”

Sorry to burst your little bubble, but he actually HAS beat the top.

Jim Miller, Donald Cerrone, Gray Maynard all were TOPS when Nate Diaz beat them, whether you like this little fact or not.

          • earlsimmons

            No they werent

          • Aimed With “V”

Denial is not just a river in Egypt, huh?

        • allansm

Apparently having a winning record against formidable opposition isn’t enough for Cereal Killer.

Cereal Killer has high standards. According to him every fighter in the UFC should have impeccable records. Anyone with more than 1 loss should be cut.

Cereal Killer is the authority in regards to skill level in MMA. He should be employed by the UFC management for his deep knowledge.

      • Junior

hes mid level with an exciting style and a long relationship he should get paid more

    • Ryan thompson

No excuse? He agreed to the terms of his contract. He lost two in a row,won a fight and demanded a tittle fight.
I’m a fan of Nate but he doesn’t seem like the most rational fellow.

If he’s trying to play the same card Melendez played he’s going about it all wrong.

  • Jim Masciantonio Jr

    he signed the contract

  • Bouncer

    no.. NO!

  • Aimed With “V”

Hey, MMAWeekly Staff, I have a question, a simple question:

Have you tried to interview Nate? He claims that everyone is scared to interview him.
I think he would shed some light on his current situation, on a contract, the Khabib fight, everything.

There is a feeling in the air of MMA sites that you are kind of afraid to ask the wrong people the wrong questions, because you’re afraid to lose some kind of privileges from the UFC/Dana White.
Come on, prove that it’s not the case and that you’re independent!
    Interview Nate Diaz!

  • Kyle Reusch

Good everyone is seriously tired of the Diaz brothers. What a bunch of self entitled punks.

    • Kyle Reusch

and if no one noticed….. None of these guys get paid what they should. Should be at least close to boxing salaries. It is not even close.

      • John Firth

Have you seen what boxers get paid? Only the top drawer guys get megabucks. The rest would be better off on MMA cards.

    • allansm

      You don’t speak for everyone.

      He’s an entertaining, skilled fighter.

      • Manuel Lopez

well said… I agree he is a very skilled fighter and so is his brother… UFC would be fools to let them go.

    • Seth

Just leave. Imagine that there are people who watch Nate’s fights because they like him. And there is a lot folks like that.

  • horace

If its via twitter its possible he may have been hacked.

  • AXE MURDERER

Well now he can go join bellator & fight eddie & chandler or justin gaethje at wsof

  • Junior

this is why fighters need to realise they are the commodity, not the ufc. people scared to drop contracts. an ideal professional fighter should travel to numerous fight organizations to really showcase themselves and self promote. if every fighter/manager did that the quality of competition in mma will be shown EVERYWHERE. Hence seeing more good mma fighters in and outside ufc. nate and his manager should have credit for that at least. nate acts like a bitch but his achievements show he doesnt deserve a mid level salary. ufc lookin dodgy for a while now, for a calm ufc guys like gsp, nate and others to talk, more s–t will go down for sure

  • Raymond Gonzalez

Go ahead, Nate. You have nothing to prove to anyone. There’s no future in getting punched in the face. You seem like a smart guy. Best wishes in the future, my brother. You and your big bro.

  • a payday close

i want to see dana n ufc responce to this. he post on twitter that he wants a release n 90 comments get posted like him or hate him the kid got the it factor pony up some money in keep him n ufc
