Michael Chandler and Eddie AlvarezBellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler will get back in action for the first time since capturing the belt when he faces former UFC fighter Akihiro Gono.

The fight will take place on Friday, May 4 at Bellator 67 from the Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada.

Bellator officials announced the news on Wednesday.

Chandler won the Bellator strap in one of the most exhilarating fights in all of 2011 when he defeated former champion Eddie Alvarez by rear naked choke. The two lightweights battled back and forth and all over the cage before Chandler finally put Alvarez away in the fourth round.

Now he’ll face one of his most veteran opponents to date in Akihiro Gono.

The former Pride and UFC star has fallen on tougher times of late, losing his last two fights in a row and going just 3-5 in his last eight bouts.

Be that as it may, Gono will try to make waves in the Bellator lightweight division when he faces Chandler in May.

    Why is this fight happening?

    It’s funny

Eddie Alvarez get’s Aoki, the more high profile fight, and the champ (Chandler), ends up fighting Gono – a man who’s on the decline.

    Solid match making! 😛
