MMAWeekly has learned that former UFC Middleweight Champion Dave “The Warrior” Menne has signed to face rising Team Quest star Ed “Short Fuse” Herman in the main event fight at an Extreme Challenge show slated for July 23rd in Wisconsin.
The fight will be Dave’s second appearance in a little over a month after having missed the first quarter if this year due to obligations with his new training facility Northway Martial Sport & Fitness, as well recuperation time from corrective eye surgery.
Herman on the other hand has had a busy 2005 including wins over Rhomez Brower, Nick Thompson, and in March he stepped up to 205lbs and defeated Glover Teixeira for the Sportfight Light-Heavyweight Championship. Herman’s biggest fight to date was a tough loss to UFC veteran Joe Doerksen last December. In that fight Herman was dominating the more seasoned fighter until fatigue and inexperience cost him at the end.
Menne is most known for becoming the UFC’s first ever champion at 185lbs when he defeated Gil Castillo at UFC 33 via unanimous decision to take the title. Dave is currently riding a five fight winning streak in the Extreme Challenge promotion in shows that he has helped promote with Team Extreme manager Monte Cox.
“The thing I’m happy about is he can finally see.” Cox told MMAWeekly. “He has had 20/800 vision and I told him he had to get it fixed or I wouldn’t let him fight any more.” Menne did get his eyes fixed and since then, it has really rejuvenated his career.
Throughout his career Menne has faced some of the most well known fighters in the sport including Shonie Carter, Matt Hughes, Carlos Newton, Murillo Bustamante, and Hayoto “Mach” Sakurai. The winner of this fight would prove them ready for the UFC.
