Dream officials on Monday added a women’s 115-pound feature bout between Megumi Fujii and Karla Benitez to its New Year’s Eve extravaganza Fields presents Fight for Japan “Genkidesuka!! Oomisoka!! 2011.?
Fujii (24-1) has long been regarded as one of the top female fighters in the world. Her only loss was a split decision to Zoila Gurgel at Bellator a year ago. She has since bounced back with consecutive victories on her home turf in Japan.
She’ll look to make it three-for-three against Benitez on New Year’s Eve in Saitama.
With a 6-1 professional record, Benitez has much less experience than Fujii, and has fought only sparingly outside of her native Spain. Normally a 125-pounder, Benitez will likely have size on her side, but Fujii is a tall order for anyone.
In addition to the bout between Fujii and Benitez, Dream also announced a IGF rules pro wrestling tag team bout pairing up Japanese MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba with Katsuyori Shibata against Shinichi Suzukawa and Atsushi Sawada.
The New Year’s Eve event is a mixed card with MMA bouts, pro wrestling bouts, and bouts mixing MMA and kickboxing rules.
Fedor Emelianenko will also make his return to Japan on the card, facing Olympic gold medal Judoka Satoshi Ishii.
