As the middleweight division continues to build towards a new #1 contender, a match-up has been made that could make that much clearer as Nate Marquardt is set to return to action on Feb 21 in London, England to square off against American Top Team stand-out, Wilson Gouveia.
The fight was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close the fight on Monday.
Marquardt comes into the fight against Gouveia after a first round drubbing of Martin Kampmann back in September. The Jackson’s team member is currently 6-2 in the Octagon with his only losses coming by the way of Anderson Silva and a controversial decision loss to Thales Leites earlier in 2008.
There had been rumors swirling that Marquardt could fill the role of coach on the upcoming season of the “Ultimate Fighter” but after the announcement that the winner of the fight between Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson getting that slot, it was only a matter of time before the Colorado native stepped into a fight again.
Wilson Gouveia is coming off of a stunning first round TKO over tough Canadian fighter, Jason MacDonald, at the “Ultimate Fighter” 8 finale show. While the Brazilian is seen as one of the toughest fighters to drop to the middleweight division, he did struggle and missed weight for his last fight, something he will have to be very cognizant of going into his next fight.
The fight will be a part of the UFC 95 card in London, England. While no official main event has been announced, it is believed that a lightweight fight between Diego Sanchez and Joe Stevenson could be part of the co-headliner for the show.
