Lyoto Machida vs. Luke Rockhold Being Discussed as Potential UFC Match-Up

August 20, 2014

Lyoto MachidaA middleweight match-up between division standouts Lyoto Machida and Luke Rockhold is being targeted by the UFC, according to a report on Wednesday afternoon.

As reported by Daniel Cormier on UFC Tonight, the organization is internally discussing the potential for the Machida vs. Rockhold showdown, and both fighters are interested in the pairing. He added that a date and venue are yet to be determined.

“Luke Rockhold vs. Lyoto Machida is coming at you,” Cormier said.

Rockhold, a teammate of Cormier’s at American Kickboxing Academy, last fought in April at UFC 172. In the bout, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion submitted Tim Boetsch in the first round. The win was his second in a row.

Machida is coming off a loss in his last fight, a failed attempt at gaining the UFC middleweight title against champion Chris Weidman. In five rounds, Machida and Weidman put on a show in one of the most memorable UFC title fights to date, but it was the titleholder who walked away with a unanimous decision.

  1. No.. why? Luke is a legit contender but has a real chance of losing to Machida. Depending on what Machida shows up, why eliminate a possible title contender?

    • Rockhold will fall down the ranks.

He is more hype than any good.

He beat 2 mid tier guys: Boetsch, Phillippou

      Machida by KO or TKO

    • Im thinking the same thing. Its not a great matchup for Luke, but like Dana always say: you’re either the best in the world, or you’re not.

  2. I get the feeling Dana not a like fan. If he wins this fight he will have to fight Cain, jones in returning Anderson silva for he gets a shot at the tittle he already deserve. N what if michida looses? Should retire. Contender -vs- career bout

  3. hard to believe Machida is a gatekeeper! He is 36 however. I still feel he is gonna put alot of up and comers in their place, starting with Luke.

  4. That’s the problem with the MW division, unless we get new prospects we’ll have to wait untill Belfort and Machida age and retire to see some new contenders. They’re just a league above the rest of the competition in my opinion.
Though we have to see how Belfort enters the octogon without his turbo.

    • rockholdsaid he wants the title shot so a win over machida will get him that, but its a huge challenge for him, but if he cant beat machida he probably wouldnt beat weidman so its the ultimate test of his creditionals, cant see him getting the W tho

      • That’s what I said. Everyone that wants a shot will have to get through Belfort or Machida. Thing is I don’t see anyone doing it.

        • bisping just called out rockhold, hope i get to see that fight instead, think it makes more sense.
