Dan Henderson vs Lyoto Machida 478x270Testosterone replacement therapy is a controversial topic in sports.

Lyoto Machida faces Dan Henderson in the UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche co-main event on Saturday and Henderson is on TRT, but Machida isn’t concerned.

“Everybody has their own reasons for using it.  I don’t know, I’m not a doctor.  I’m a fighter,” said Machida during the UFC 157 open workouts on Wednesday.  “If the UFC says it’s okay, I think it’s good.”

Henderson has used the therapy since 2007.  Some fighters are hesitant to accept a fight with someone who uses TRT, but Machida isn’t one of them.

“No, it’s okay for me.  No problem,” he said.

UFC president Dana White recently stated that the organization will test fighters using TRT throughout their training camp in an effort to ensure it’s not being abused.  He also said, “If your testosterone level isn’t high enough, maybe you’re too old to fight.”

Henderson is 42 years old, but Machida feels Henderson can still complete with the top guys in the division.

“(Henderson) is old, but he’s still good.  He’s still strong.  He’s beaten a lot of guys.  He can still compete at a high level.”

Machida has a good attitude, but I think this whole TRT thing is a slippery slope. I completely agree with White when he says, if your testosterone is too low, then maybe you’re too old to fight. And I’ll add, maybe you abused steroids when you were younger; or hell, maybe you just aren’t supposed to be a fighter. Maybe you’re supposed to be a creative writer or something.

Why should we allow people to take a drug to get them up to the standards of younger athletes? I watch MMA and the fighters because I respect the discipline it takes to train every day to get to a level that you can go five rounds, and look like a gifted and talented athlete even after taking a beating. I don’t watch MMA to see every Tom, Dick and Harry shoot themselves up with drugs to substitute for hours of training every day, or to see older people compete when they should just hang it up.

Certain people have different genetic gifts that allow them to excel at different things. To me, that’s what makes fighting, or any other sport, interesting.

Very well said. Its time to move on and for other things when you need drugs to compete. These guys are just too old to compete and need to do so thing else.

Every person who is over 25 should take testosterone. It slows aging. Just because something is “natural” doesn’t mean it’s good. Death is natural. STD’s are usually natural. Testosterone use is great, but testosterone abuse is no good.

Not only is this one of the dumbest comments ever, but it also isn’t a response to anything I said.

Very well said. Natural aging is not a disease and it doesn’t need to be treated. If they want to level the the field for older fighters they should have age brackets maybe, but not TRT.

Natural aging may as well be a disease and if it can be treated why not? Men have a right to be have a natural level of T that allows them to feel like men and do the things men do.

As long as it’s not abused, I don’ see it as an issue. They’re maintaining a certain level not adding to it.

I am shocked that Pros are picking Hendo. But then, those pros were all non-Brazilian fighters.

Only thing Lyoto has to worry about is the H-bomb. I seriously believe that Hendo’s punching power (his right hand) has gotten stronger as he got older. I never saw Hendo was a KO artist in Pride days, although he has KOed some smaller guys at 185 (but they were mostly guys like Ryo Chonan). Then he KOs Wandy, Bisping, Babalu, Feijao, and Fedor, and then gives Shogun a wooping. The TRT must be going to his hand…maybe that is where his testicles are located.
