Lyoto Machida UFC 157 Pre 9If Lyoto Machida gets past Gegard Mousasi at UFC Fight Night 36 next week, he could be the new No. 1 contender for the UFC middleweight title.

UFC president Dana White said on Wednesday that a win on Feb. 15 in Brazil would make a strong statement about Machida earning a shot at the gold.

“Yes, if Machida wins, he could possibly be next in line for a title shot,” White told FOX Sports Live when asked of the fighter’s future.

If he is victorious next week, Machida’s opportunity would come after current middleweight champion Chris Weidman and No.1 contender Vitor Belfort settle their differences at UFC 173 on May 24.

A former UFC light heavyweight champion, Machida dropped down to 185 pounds in his last fight, taking on Mark Munoz at UFC Fight Night 30 last October. The fight ended with Machida landing a well-placed head kick, knocking out Munoz in the first round.

Machida and Mousasi are expected to headline next week’s card in Brazil, which takes place at the Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul.

I want to see Cung Le and Machida any one who thinks Cung is over the hill needs to watch him train lets see Kung fu vs Karate

    • dgs

That is one fight I’ve never thought of, but I agree, it is extremely intriguing; I would love to see it!

    • vbob

Cung le is a sanshou and teakwondo fighter not kung fu…

      • Extreme_One

        U know nothing

  • drazerkan

he just dropped down to middleweight.. what about the winner of kennedy vs bisping and souza vs carmont.. i think they deserve to be priortized before machida.. mousasi is no gatekeeper as well..

    • I love Machida but I agree. He just beat Munoz. There are many more fights for him. Being the former champ at LHW gives him an edge I guess.

    • some dude

      Bisbing? Kennedy? really?

Imo Machida is a much bigger name than all those fighters. And at this point there isnt a fighter in the division who is on a hot winning streak. If Lyoto wins he would have two good wins over two great fighters. Remember: Weidman got a shot at Silva after beating Munoz and everyone thought he doesnt deserve it.
The bottom line is that …
Either Weidman vs Machida or Belfort vs Machida is by far more interesting and intriguing than any other match up to make in the MW division right after Chris and Vitor settle the score.

Can’t wait to see the winner of this fight to get a matchup with Belfort. I’m pretty Vitor is going to Triple-Axel Heel kick Chris Weidmans head into the third row of the MGM.

Feb. 15th will be a big day for me. It will be my first time on a UFC event and I will watch one of my favorite fighters: the Dragon Machida! His opponent is tough enough to make him the next #1 contender in my opnion. GO DRAGON!

    • solo

Have a good time down there.

      • André Maranzato

Thanks man, I’m really looking foward to it!

then agan Machida would have to wait 9-10 months to fight Weidman/ Belfort

  • TNT

Machida would have a frank shamrock run with that belt… I’m not the biggest machida fan but don’t see anyone @ 185 that can stop him for a long time

    • macarrech

If that happen then Anderson Silva will never fight for that title again.

Either fighter would be great for the next contender, but the winner would have to sit over 10 months. The winner should get the victor of Souza vs Carmont since fight is on the same card the timing would work out barring injuries. And somehow you gotta get Rockhold involved as well.

    • Gio_Princip

And end up with Carmont as #1 contender? ouch.

  • Alex

I doubt Machida will get past Mousasi. If Machida wins it will because he ran and tried to turn a fight into a point fighting fight.

  • some dude

Rockhold vs Uriah Hall, make it happen!
