The heavyweights take center stage this weekend at UFC on Fox 1, and the next contender to the title will be crowned in just over a month when former champion Brock Lesnar meets former Strikeforce title holder Alistiar Overeem.
The bout that headlines UFC 141 was officially tagged as a No. 1 contender’s match as announced by UFC officials on Thursday.
The winner of the fight between Lesnar and Overeem will meet the winner from this weekend’s historic match-up between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.
For former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, this will be his first fight back since losing the title to Velasquez in Oct 2010. Lesnar was scheduled to return in June, but a second bout with diverticulitis put him on the shelf following surgery, but he’s back, he’s healthy and he’s got vengeance on his mind.
“Brock Lesnar is 110 percent healthy and ready to get the world title back,” UFC President Dana White said. “He asked for the toughest test we could find for him and there’s no doubt that Alistair Overeem fits the bill. He’s been a champion in other organizations and came to UFC to fight the best guys in the world. He wants to show everyone that he’s the number one heavyweight in the sport. This fight is the perfect fight to close out 2011.”
Overeem will make his UFC debut after spending several years in other major organizations like Pride, Dream and Strikeforce. The former K-1 Grand Prix winner most recently defeated Fabricio Werdum in Strikeforce, but then left the promotion and signed with the UFC.
Lesnar and Overeem will come face to face on Friday at a UFC 141 pre-fight press conference scheduled for 5pm ET/2pm PT at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium just hours before the UFC on Fox weigh-ins.
The two heavyweights will then get in final preparation mode as they start getting ready for an epic collision at UFC 141 on Dec. 30 with the winner fighting for the heavyweight title in 2012.
