Things didn’t exactly go the way that Jeff Rexroad thought they would in his Friday night fight with Lucas Pimenta at Legacy FC 14 in Houston, Texas.
“I think that my cardio and my striking will be able to help me dictate where the fight goes,” he told MMAWeekly.com in the days leading up to the fight.
It actually turned out to be Pimenta’s striking that dictated where the fight went. He rocked Rexroad early in the first round and put him on the defensive with a flurry of follow-up punches. Rexroad recovered, if only briefly, before Pimenta took him down and unleashed a solid barrage of ground and pound.
Rexroad again survived, patiently awaiting an opportunity.
That opportunity came in the second round when Pimenta put Rexroad on his back with a solid double-leg takedown. This time, however, Rexroad started working what originally looked like a gogoplata attempt, a la Shinya Aoki. He morphed it into a different choke that he had been working on in the gym leading up to the bout.
Throwing one leg over Pimenta’s back, reaching under his chin with the same-side arm, grabbing his ankle, Rexroad then locked up a modified triangle choke that was so tight, Pimenta immediately tapped out.
“This is a choke that I’ve been working,” said Rexroad. “Don’t really have a name for it, but you kind of use the arm instead of the leg.”
Rexroad was originally slated to face Jorge Patino for the Legacy FC welterweight championship, but Patino fell out of the bout due to injury. He and Pimenta squared off for the interim belt, however, giving Rexroad the next best thing, setting up a future showdown with Patino.
“Unfortunately (Patino) got injured,” said Rexroad after the fight. “I was looking forward to the fight. When he gets healthy, I’d be honored to fight him.”
Josh Sampo knew going into his fight with UFC veteran Antonio Banuelos, he had a golden opportunity at hand.
“I don’t want to bank everything on this one fight, it’s just the next fight in my career, and I’m just taking them one at a time,” he told MMAWeekly.com. “Still, if I look further on, it can really help my career.”
And that it surely did. Sampo snatched a unanimous decision victory over Banuelos, opening up a world of options for his fight career.
“If I get a call from the big show, it’d be awesome,” said Sampo. “Legacy, if they can get me another fight. I just wanna keep fighting.”
