There’s been a lot of speculation about the future of former WWE superstar turned MMA fighter Bobby Lashley, but according to him he’d like to be fighting for the Strikeforce heavyweight title in 2011.
Lashley talked about his future intentions on Monday, and laid out a very clear plan that with 2010 winding down, he’d like a clear path to the title in the first part of 2011.
“Hopefully at the first part of next year,” Lashley said when asked about a title shot. “I don’t know when my next fight will be. That’s up to Scott Coker to decide. I’m not going to take any time off. I like to train and I want to stay conditioned. After this fight I just hope to keep training and get that title shot next year.”
There has been a fair amount of criticism launched towards Lashley about the opponents he’s faced since making his move to MMA in 2008. Over that time, Lashley has gone 5-0, but his opponents have a combined record of 61-49-2. Included among those opponents are Wes Simms, Bob Sapp, and Jason Guida.
Lashley has stated several times that he doesn’t pick any opponent, and will face the fighters that Strikeforce chooses for him. His next test is 8-1 fighter Chad Griggs.
Lashley believes it’s his skill set that will carry him through this fight and on to the next challenge in his bid to become Strikeforce heavyweight champion.
“I’ve had a good amount of confidence going into each of my fights,” he stated. “I have 20 years of wrestling experience and three national championships and I came in second at the world championships. So I know people are thinking they have to avoid the takedown with me.
“With this fight I know I have my wrestling ability, but there are other things I would like to work on. One thing my coach at the Olympic Training Center used to say was, ‘You could lie to the media, you could lie to everyone else, but once you get back to your hotel the night before your fight you can’t lie to yourself.’ At this point I can look at myself and say I’m 100-percent ready for this fight.”
Bobby Lashley will face Chad Griggs at Strikeforce: Houston on Aug. 21.
