MOLINE, Ill. — Despite owning the sport’s best record, Jason Black is far from a household name in mixed martial arts.
That may change as Black faces UFC veteran Shonie Carter in the main event of “King of the Cage: Redemption on the River” on Feb. 17 at The MARK of the Quad Cities. The event will be shown on Pay-Per-View on March 10.
“It really doesn’t bother me,” Black says of the lack of recognition. “I’d like to fight some bigger fights, but if it doesn’t happen I’m okay with that.”
Black (19-0-1) and Carter (69-15-7) will headline the star-studded 16-fight card. Five other UFC veterans and a Pride veteran join the most of the Midwest’s elite fighters in the biggest MMA event in Illinois since Quad-City Ultimate drew 8,000 in the same venue in 1996.
“It’s kind of fun to go back to the same arena 10 years later with a big event,” said promoter Monte Cox, who also promoted the Quad-City Ultimate event. “We’ve got a great lineup, so we’re hoping the community supports us.”
So far, more than 2,000 tickets have been sold with almost 2 weeks to go.
UFC veteran Jeff Curran (24-7-1) faces Pride veteran Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett (16-10-2) in the co-main event.
Tickets are available at The MARK box office and all Ticketmaster locations.
