For all the YouTube fanatics that followed Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson into mixed martial arts, UFC president Dana White on Thursday confirmed the former backyard brawler’s next bout. He will step in to face fellow “The Ultimate fighter: The Heavyweights” alum Matt Mitrione at UFC 113 on May 8 in Montreal.
Kimbo (4-1) was thrown feet first into the MMA fire when he began his career with EliteXC. The failed promotion immediately threw him into main event bouts on Showtime and CBS, not quite the same tact that the Ultimate Fighting Championship has taken with the former YouTube star.
“The thing about Kimbo Slice is I said to Kimbo Slice, the only way this guy gets into the UFC is if he goes into The Ultimate Fighter,” said UFC president Dana White.
He did that and then defeated UFC veteran Houston Alexander in his first official fight in the Octagon.
“I gotta give Kimbo Slice his props. He went in and fought Houston Alexander in a fight that I thought was gonna be a completely different fight than it was. And if you want to know the truth, I thought Houston was gonna win that fight. Kimbo Slice legitimately won that fight and beat a guy that I consider a real guy, a guy who has fought some good guys and beat ‘em.”
Neither he nor Mitrione made it to the finals of The Ultimate Fighter.
Mitrione (1-0) has a lone win over Marcus Jones, who was also on TUF 10, to his professional credit. Kimbo’s popularity gives him the opportunity to not only build off that victory, but also launch himself into the limelight at the same time.
Lyoto Machida and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua headline UFC 113 in a rematch for Machida’s UFC light heavyweight championship belt at the Bell Centre.
