khabib nurmagomedov UFC 160Almost as quickly as his UFC 170 fight with Rustam Khabilov was cancelled, Rafael dos Anjos landed a new gig and a new Russian to fight.

UFC officials, just minutes after revealing the cancellation, announced that dos Anjos had verbally agreed to face the man that almost no one wants to fight, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The two will face each other in the Octagon at UFC on Fox 11 on April 19 in Orlando, Fla.

Dos Anjos (20-6) has won his five most recent bouts. In his most recent outing, dos Anjos took out top lightweight Donald Cerrone with a unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 27.

Nurmagomedov, however, might be the only fighter in the lightweight division on a hotter streak than dos Anjos… and he’s been on the streak since 2008.

The Russian has never lost a professional fight, winning all 21 of the bouts he has contested. Because of that, it’s been difficult for the UFC to nail down an opponent for him.

Fighters from Gilbert Melendez to Nate Diaz had been in the works for Nurmagomedov, but for one reason or another, they couldn’t get the deal done. Having just had his fight with Khabilov nixed, dos Anjos was ready to jump when offered Nurmagomedov.

UFC officials have yet to announce where the bout will fall on the UFC on Fox 11 fight card, but it has to be a solid contender for the four-fight main card on Fox, which is headline by Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne.

  • This has FIGHT OF THE NIGHT written all over it.

I hope so, but I feel Khabib might dominate this fight. I don’t know why but I think it might be like the Pat Healy fight.

      • Aimed With “V”

dos Anjos has much better striking than Healy.
He’s also more aggressive (his aggression is one of his key weapons to recent victories), and his takedown defense is probably better.

A matchup is very competitive, and I don’t see the clear winner her , but I think that dos Anjos takes the first round, at least.

        • Maddawgmar

I agree Dos Anjos has better striking than Healy. But takedown defense, I don’t think so. And Dos Anjos’s aggression could be bad in this fight because it can open him up for a takedown. I am hoping for a good fight but feel Khabib is just the better fight. I like RDA but IMO Nurmagomedov is the future 155 champion.

          • Aimed With “V”

Well, Bocek is a very very good wrestler, but he couldn’t take RDA down even once.
Healy…his takedowns are good, but Bobby Green could take him down, and he’s not exactly a great wrestler, even though his defense is great.

I’m not saying Khabib will definitely lose – but I think the fight will be harder than one-sided decision win over Healy.

And yes, Khabib is definitely a champion material.

Russians dominating over Brazilians now… Cant wait to see this guy in octagon again.

I really don’t get why Silva & co didn’t make this fight from the beginning. Made much more sense for both guys, and Dos Anjos manager even thought he had said yes to a fight with Khabib and not Rustam. Also Cerrone said he’d fight him as well but UFC gave him Edison, so they’re obvs as much to blame for Khabib not having an opponent as anyone. Well they’ve got the hype they wanted i guess, and now we finally get to see how K will do against a top contender. About f***** time.

    • Maddawgmar

Because at the time Dos Anjos/Khabilov was made Khabib was slated to fight Melendez. So that was the only logical fight to make.

Could be title eliminator at 155, if only Aldo wouldn’t be next 🙂 But for sure winner of that one will land in next title eliminator to determine opp for Aldo/Pettis winner 🙂 That being said…War Khabib! 😀

    • Jan Oglydogly

Agree, give him Bendo. He needs a fight as well.

      • Seth

Not really…Bendo was butthurt when he heard he won’t get title shot. Im fan of him, but he cant be that stupid to actually believe he is next in line now… .-.

        • Aimed With “V”

Bendo is 0-2 against the current champ – which means that he’ll be next in line when there will be NO ONE BUT HIM in this line.

          • Seth

            Agree 100%, man 🙂

      • brad king

dont need another boring bendo fight. He will only lay on top of someone and do no damage

        • Aimed With “V”

Actually he prefers to strike…like in Melendez and Thomson fights…

        • Jan Oglydogly

I do not like Bendo either but both fighters need a high caliber opponent.

  • Aimed With “V”

dos Anjos is the fighter that improves more than anyone else.
He improved in every possible directions: striking, wrestling, BJJ.
Plus, he has a platinum jaw right now, which makes him pretty much unKOable.

Khabib – well, unstoppable machine of Dagestani level wrestling and heavy hands.

The winner, whoever it is, should become the next contender and meet Pettis-Aldo winner.

Props to Rafael dos Anjos for taking the fight unlike Nate Diaz and Gilbert Melendez

    • Aimed With “V”

He wanted to take the fight from the start – he took Khabilov fight only because he (or his manager) confused him with Khabib.

  • King Of The Spread

Well Dos Anjos accepted the other fight thinking he was fighting Khabib only to find out he was fighting a different Russian.

  • brad king

numragomdov will slaughter Nate Diaz puh-lease
