Sarah Kaufman’s trash talk leading into her title defense against Roxanne Modafferi on Friday night had more to do with Strikeforce than her opponent.
Relegated to a supporting role on the Challengers event in Everett, Wash., she has been none too pleased with her treatment as a champion in the promotion.
Most talk in Strikeforce’s defense has centered on Kaufman’s recent three-fight decision streak, but that argument isn’t going to hold water anymore.
After two rounds of spurts of punching prowess, mixed in with an abundance of clinch work, Kaufman put a punctuation mark on Modafferi that brought to mind thoughts of Matt Hughes or Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
Late into round three, a tiring Modafferi pulled Kaufman into her guard, searching for an armbar. Kaufman responded by picking Modafferi up and slamming her back down. Modafferi’s head bounced off the mat, putting her out cold. Fight over.
The first words out of her mouth after the fight?
“Get me on a main card on Showtime guys. I think I deserve it.”
If that finish didn’t make a case for Kaufman’s argument that her welterweight belt should be defended on main card’s on Showtime, not relegated to the promotion’s breeding ground events, nothing ever will.
Next up for Kaufman is a title defense against Marloes Coenen, who is dropping down to welterweight following a loss to Strikeforce women’s middleweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos.
