Could this be the Sleeper Fight of the Night?
Martin Kampmann (12-2) vs Crafton Wallace (9-1-1)
Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann is the current Cage Warriors middleweight champion. Kampmann has fought in European Vale Tudo events and recently made a successful U.S. debut in the resurrected World Fighting Alliance. A former Danish Thai boxing champion, Martin is coming off of a win over Edwin Aguilar. Crafton “Blaze” Wallace is a 2003 ISKA Muay Thai tournament champion and a veteran of Absolute Fighting Championships. Wallace is coming off of a win over Brian Green at AFC 16. This will be the UFC debut for both fighters.
This match-up has the makings to be the sleeper fight of the night. Both of these fighters have strong kickboxing backgrounds and can potentially entertain fans with a good stand-up war. Kampmann and Wallace have never been knocked out and it’s hard to imagine this fight going the distance.
Kampmann possesses a powerful right hand and a nice high kick. In addition to knees from the clinch, Martin has a strong short left hook. His striking seems to be more technically sound than Wallace’s. Crafton has shown to leave his hands low and throw multiple hooks that leave him open to counter punches. Wallace is the more aggressive and explosive fighter. He has really strong knees from the clinch and likes to throw elbows from the top and bottom. Like his Danish opponent, Crafton also has powerful hands.
On the ground, the advantage goes to Kampmann. Wallace’s ground game is suspect and untested. Though Kampmann isn’t known for his grappling, I do feel that his ground skills are underrated. “The Hitman” took first place in a submission wrestling tournament back in 2004 and holds four wins by submission.
These two fighters will arguably be each other’s toughest test to date. In terms of physical size, the much younger Kampmann is considered a small middleweight compared to Wallace. However, behind the deceivingly small build is a well-rounded fighter. What he lacks in physical size, he will gain with solid technique and a better ground game. Expect to see a few good exchanges after these strikers get a feel of each other in the first round. Look for Kampmann to take the fight to the ground and submit Wallace with a rear naked choke in the second.
Prediction: Martin Kampmann submits Crafton Wallace RD2
