Strikeforce may find its next lightweight title contender on June 18. Former EliteXC champion K.J. Noons returns to 155 pounds to face Jorge Masvidal on the Dallas fight card. UFC officials announced the bout on Wednesday.
Noons (10-3) has been out of action since last October, when he went five rounds in a welterweight title bout against Nick Diaz. Noons is now 1-1 against Diaz, but after tasting the 170-pound division, he wanted to return to his natural weight class at 155 pounds.
Facing Noons in June will be American Top Team fighter Jorge Masvidal (21-6), who made a successful return to Strikeforce in March with a unanimous decision win over previously undefeated Billy Evangelista.
Masvidal has gone 2-2 over his last four fights, but one of those losses was to Paul Daley when he ventured to the welterweight division for a fight.
Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is currently awaiting his next challenge. The winner of this fight could rocket to the top of the contender’s list.
