Justin Gaethje Excited to Be Back on NBC, Eyes Next WSOF Title Fight

In the two years since joining the World Series of Fighting, lightweight Justin Gaethje has been one of the promotion’s top performers. In seven bouts with the company, Gaethje has won them all and captured their 155-pound championship.

In celebration of his accomplishments in WSOF, the promotion has made Gaethje part of its upcoming Unstoppable: The Road Ahead television special to air on NBC on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m excited,” Gaethje told MMAWeekly.com. “It’s on NBC, and that’s big time. It’s the second time I’ve been on NBC, and last time it was a big difference. NBC Sports Net and NBC are two totally different platforms, so I’m pumped to be on that.

“It’s the biggest platform, and I hope a lot of people watch it and I get some new fans.”

Unfortunately, Gaethje was unable to make it to the video tapings for the show, but he figures that his recent title defense against Luis Palomino in March will play a big part in the special.

“I was supposed to go out to New York and do a thing with them, but I couldn’t make it because of a last minute emergency that I had,” said Gaethje. “I know you’ll see interviews with (light-heavyweight champion) David Branch and (bantamweight champion) Marlon Moraes.

“I saw something saying that Bas Rutten and Renzo Gracie were going to analyze my last fight with Palomino, so it should be interesting to get their thoughts on that.”

Justin-Gaethje-750In addition to the NBC special, it was announced recently that Gaethje had signed a new contract with the promotion, along with Branch and Moraes.

“I’m having a great time in WSOF,” said Gaethje. “They’re doing great things for my career. I hope they build up and do great things for the company. I’m doing my best and working my hardest.”

As for what’s next for Gaethje, he is unsure, but he doesn’t think that his most recent opponent would want to fight again anytime soon.

“I think I’m fighting again in September,” said Gaethje. “I’m really not sure who they’ve got. I don’t know who is going to be next. I heard that Palomino wanted a rematch, but I couldn’t imagine he’d have that big a set of huevos to want to take that ass whooping twice in a row.

“(Palomino) rocked me one good time where my knees kind of buckled, but I was all right. It was a super-fun fight. I could have wrestled him a little bit more, but I was having too much fun.”
