Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Junior-dos-Santos-UFC-131-w-0375-478x270UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and former titleholder Junior dos Santos will meet for the third time at UFC 166 on Oct. 19 at the Toyota Center in Houston.  Dos Santos knocked out Velasquez in their first encounter and Velasquez avenged the loss with a one-sided unanimous decision in the rematch.

“I don’t think he’s number one.  He’s good, but I think I am number one,” said dos Santos.  ”When I hit people, they go down.”

I love Dos santos confidence he is over the top with it lol,all he got is striking,he doesnt keep hands up runs from taking damage, got struck by Mark Hunt untill the thumb injury and he still thinks he’s the man, yeah see u

    • Cigano

JDS has fought some of the best strikers and put them all away. He may have got scratched here and there but that’s what happens when you go against the best. Cain is being protected by UFC and has taken the easy route. The only good heavyweights he’s gone up against was Big Nog.

      • Lucas Freire

I think HW division is not really that deep to keep a guy on a 6 win streak for having a title shot.
But, with the belt he has no protection from the UFC, he dominated Cigano on the second fight, and Bigfoot on both fights.
He’s the champ, and defended the belt decisively. He needs no protection.

        • Kip

Agree, anyone saying Cain needs protecting is delusional. Cain was actually quite injured in the first JDS fight and fully healthy for the second and look what happened. JDS relying on that big shot is the problem for him. If he can’t land it he’ll be smothered again.

          • Cigano

JDS was also injured in the first fight too.

          • Cptmats

“Cain was actually quite injured in the first JDS fight and fully healthy for the second and look what happened.”

JDS was just as injured in the first fight and put Cain to sleep.

In the Second fight Junior should have been in the Hospital, Not fighting and Cain couldn’t finish him.

        • Cigano

look at the guys Cain fought when he made his way to the top and look at the guys JDS fought, Cain had it easy – Kongo, Rothwell, Morris, Lesnar. From the moment JDS arrived, he fought better competition enroute to winning the title. As champion, Cain has fought the same guys back to back fights. what gives!!

          • Lucas Freire

Yeah I understand what you said, my point is that pretty much like Jon Jones, there wasn’t much to do by the time he got a 6-win-streak. See, Jones last victory before the title shot was against Bader, a top5-10 guy, not really title contender material.
There’s always the matter of how the division is sorted out by the moment the guy gets a huge streak.
To further explain my point a WW example: When he got the title shot Thiago Alves had a 7-win streak with names like Hughes and Koscheck and outstanding wins against these guys. He fought GSP and lost.

Next title shot was Dan Hardy, who was on a 7-win streak too, but the biggest name he defeated was Mike Swick. See what I meant now? There are times where the division just runs out of clear title contenders, and on a division as thin as HW that’s why Cain got the shot, and that’s why he got rematches on his title defenses. Other than Werdum/Cormier and maybe Barnett, who else the HW division has to offer?

          • Cigano

I just feel that Cain could’ve fought more top names to reach the top or even just to test his chin because I don’t think he can take a punch very well.

          • Anthony Becerra

Doesn’t change the fact that velasquez beat dos santos the second time around. Doesn’t that label him a better fighter than all the guys jds faced? Honestly, I believe velasquez would have finished mark hunt much earlier with his non stop pressure. Not taking anything away from hunt, he’s a hell of a fighter.

          • Cigano

had jds been mentally focused and not overtrained or dealt with his divorce i think the fight wouldn’t have been as one sided so its debatable. also, i don’t think cain could handle being punched by guys with one punch knockouts but cain probably would’ve give hunt a hard time had the fight been on the ground the whole time.

          • Cptmats

Well this is his third fight with Junior so he def isn’t being protected but i Do agree he had an easy road to the tittle !

          • Cigano

the last four fights Cain had were with two of the same guys; one of them a great striker and the other was just a slow heavyweight. i wanna see how cain would fare against roy nelson, josh barnett or mark hunt … cain hasn’t proven to me yet that he can take a legit hit (to the face at least) and continue on.

      • Milos Rackovic

We’ll see but i doubt u can keep 1 dimensional striker in the division for too long

        • Cigano

That “one dimensional” striker has beaten some of the very best strikers in the ufc.

          • Anthony Becerra

Yes with STRIKERS, but not well rounded fighters who have great talents and technique who utilize their overall ability to fight standing up and take it to the ground like velasquez.

          • Cigano

most of the guys jds fought were well rounded. werdum, carwin, gonzaga, mir, nelson all tried but couldn’t keep jds down so they chose to stand and trade leather.

  • https://www.facebook.com/bestnicknameeverbros Eugenio Croitoru

I want JDS to win, but I feel like Cain has the size advantage. When he punches every punch is like a KO punch, JDS can’t take too many of those if he wants to win this fight

    • Cigano

cain threw everything he had at jds and still couldn’t put him away. had it been jds in reverse throwing all the punches, cain definetly would be out cold. jds has shown he’s got a good chin and can take a punch.

      • Big Tuna

JDS surely can take a punch his face was a catchers mitt last time

    • Big Tuna

Cain is smaller how would he gain the size advantage?

    • Cptmats

Not sure why you would say that ? Two things we no for sure , JDS can put Cain to sleep with one ! And Cain doesn’t have anything JDS can’t take.

I’m Not sure how anyone could think the second fight meant anything, Junior was completely gassed after three minute….and it had nothing to do with his opponent !

  • jc

Couldnt knock out Big Country…..just sayin

    • Cigano

jds gave roy a good thumping regardless he knocked him out or not. and roy experienced deja vu all over when he faced stipe miocic.

  • JuniorNoKORoy

Everybody except Roy “Big Country” Nelson. Apparently the beating Velazquez gave him gave Jr. some sort of amnesia…LOL…I hope he’s more competitive this time that he doesn’t have his old fart ugly wife in his life.

    • Cigano

jds put roy on his ass so many times in the fight.

  • #1mmafan.

And the new UFC heavyweight champion!!! Nuff said

    • Big Tuna

Not enough said…he took a nap last Time against this opponent

      • #1mmafan.

        Buff said!!! Little tuna

        • #1mmafan.

          I meant nuff. Stupid spellcheck

  • candelario

it’s hard to hit something, you can’t catch

  • dgs

Junior, I love watching you fight, and you are definitely who I’m rooting for in this rematch. But… Cain really schooled you bad in your second fight, and you will need a VERY good game plan this time around to beat him. Yes you hit like a Mack truck, and yes you can KO anyone in the heavyweight division on any given day, but you will need more than KO power to beat Cain.

As much as I dislike Cain (take your brown pride with you back to Mexico along with your Mexican flag), unless he’s sick or injured for this third fight, I see it going down just like the second, unfortunately.

    • candelario

brown pride is about being proud of your heritage, your roots, about not being ashamed of your skin color…. I think you’re misunderstanding it (brown pride) in the context as the phrase “white pride” which historically has had a racial undertone… be proud of your heritage Italian, English, Chinese, or whatever… being proud of your heritage does not equate to being less of an American…. God bless the USA

      • Mike mckinney

No one should feel shame for their heritage. It’s something they have no control over. The same goes towards “pride.”
Reguardless of what anyone is intending; claiming pride of a race is a seperatist attitude. It implies everyone should feel differently about their own skin color.
As well, claiming pride over ones own heritage is putting it above others. At least in ones own mind. Whether it be with intent or not. That is what the statement is, by definition of the words. Reguardless of skin tone, as long as people seperate themselves from humanity as a whole, they’re requesting others to do the same… And no one race wishes to look up to another.
And we all know how “equal but seperate” worked out.

    • Ed

Mexico! Mexico! Mexico! Haha were here to stay and there’s nothing you can do about it!! Lmaol I can’t wait till your daughter or son brings home a Mexican ! And I bet you must hate pettis and Cruz to!! They are mex and I have the twitter messages to prove it!! Lmaol!!!! Pura rasa puto!

      • SpeedyGonzalez

Raza is with a “Z” not “S” you ignorant Mexican! It’s the ignorant people like you who give Mexico a bad name. You must be from the north part of mexico where they put a lot of long endings on words. No pos nooooooo! Dame un burritooooooo, y un par de taquitoooooooos! Un saludo pa mi paaa y pa mi maaaaaaaaaaa! I swear hearing you guys talk is so funny I puke for laughing so hard. It’s like you’re always displaying your ignorance in everything that you do or say.

Go try and win a world cup and see how that goes you arrogant bastard…LOL…that’s right, you can’t because every time you play with us we own your ass. The problem with Mexicans is that they think because they won one contest they’ve won them all. They got one Mexican HW champ and they think all the champs have been Mexicans…LOL

How many Mexicans have been champs in the UFC that’s right only 1. How many Mexican fighters are in the UFC… only a few and that’s not including Roger Huerta when he fought there because he’s half Salvadorean and half Mexican.

By the way, Texas, California and Arizona don’t belong to Mexico anymore. Your drunk ass leader sold it to the USA so quit your whinning putoooooooo! LOL

Now I’m gonna go fock my Mexican girlfriend and her sister because that’s the only thing Mexico has women who just know how to spread them. Les gusta abrir las patas a las mexicanaaaaaaas…LOL G’night Moron….I mean, Mexican!

Here’s a final joke: Why did the Mexican girl get pregnant in High School? Because the English teacher told her to go do an Essay (Ese)…LOL

        • candelario

” I want to post “stupid” on this thread, so when I see someone post something stupid, I can like it, and It will say “like stupid”

          • SpeedyGonzalez

You can go back to Mexico if you want stupid, I mean Mexican. Candelario? Are you focking serious? LOL where did you get a focking ugly name like that…ah never mind your indian mother must’ve taken it out of the calendar to honor some stupid saint in Mexico. Go fock a goat Candelario…lol..that seems to be the only thing Mexicans can do rape goats and chickens…LOL Stupid! No pos mijooooo, chingaaaaa tu maaaaadre weiiiiiiiii….LOL

          • SpeedyGonzalez

Let me guess Candelario who’s name was taken out of the calendar by his indian Asstech mother LOL…Let me guess your friends call you Candy right? short for Candelario…LOL…you dumb bitch! See you in brazil where you won’t even make it to the quarter finals.

  • robc

Last I checked Junior didn’t finish Shane Carwin either. Junior will be for another long night. He may have a great chin but all that allowed in their second fight was for him to take a huge drubbing. I like both fighters but Cain has far more tools by which to win the fight. Unless Junior learns how to defend his takedowns (which even Brock Lesnar couldn’t stop), he will be on his back. Not to mention Cain beat him on the feet which I think surprised everyone.

    • yeah

“Not to mention Cain beat him on the feet which I think surprised everyone.”

Because JDS had to spend energy stuffing Cain’s takedown attempts and get up from the successful ones. And he was maybe too concerned on Cain’s takedows from the start and not his striking.

But yeah, he has to improve a lot for the next fight. Punish Cain for any failed TD attempt instead of backing off all the time.

      • Mike mckinney

Finally someone who understands that being successful in standup because of the constant threat of takedowns is not the same thing as out striking someone.
Guys like chuck, Anderson, and jds let people strike them to goat them into a standup fight.
Cain maybe very effective with switching things up, and he should do exactly that because he’d end up crushed if jds feels like its just a standup fight.

        • Lucas Freire

Well…but isn’t that the main premise of MMA? Pretty much like GSP, he’s able to outstrike and outwrestle everybody, because those guys just don’t know what he’ll do.

          • Mike mckinney

That’s one way of going about it, and yes for some guys it’s very effective. There’s nothing wrong with it.
However some viewers watch a fight like Cain vs. Jds 2 and see Cain land a lot of strikes. Maybe even more than jds and jump to the conclusion that he is a better “striker” than jds. He’s most likely/certainly not. He maybe a better “fighter” but not a better striker.
It would be almost just as silly if someone said after the first fight that jds was a better wrestler than Cain because he wasn’t taken down.

      • robc

Really so Junior was gassed in the first round from stuffing Cain’s takedowns? Cain caught him with some big shots in the first round long before Junior should have used up his energy. Your case could be made for later rounds but not the first or second.

    • Cptmats

” Unless Junior learns how to defend his takedowns”

Cain shot for Nine take downs in the first round of the last fight. First one Junior swept him and Cain was on the bottom, JDS then stuffed the next eight straight take down attempts.

Cain couldn’t take a healthy JDS if his life depended on it.

“Not to mention Cain beat him on the feet which I think surprised everyone.”

That is about as much of an acomplishment as beating up disabled person seeing how Junior should have been in a hospital, Not fighting !

  • jds_will_lose

Roy Nelson didn’t go down and Shane Carwin didn’t go down.

    • Mr Pete

Yeah, but did you see their faces?
I Love Trolls….always ready to criticize with a smart ass remark

      • Advance*

First off, you’re calling someone a troll for telling the truth? JDS clearly said it to discredit Cain. He keeps saying how Cain hit him for 5 rounds and wasn’t able to finish him. Well did you see Dos Santo’s face after the fight?

        • Mr Pete

whats them people called who only points out the bad things but never gives credit for the goods things that people do?
Junior knocked out every fighter he has faced but two, yet dumb asses like you still are able to troll. The 2 he did not knock out, he beat the hell out of and still here you are trying to be a smart ass, like getting beat up by Cain discredits you as a fighter? Its Cain muthafukn Velasquez, the UFC Heavy Weight champion, but you and douch boy is right, Junior is bum cause he didnt knock out 2 people, who just so happen to be some of the toughest HW’s in the world but never mind he beat the hell out of them, cause he be discredit now.

    • Cptmats

      Yes they both went down.

  • Big Tuna

Why does everyone get wounded about Cain carrying the Mexican flag… Flags from Ireland, England, Japan, Brazil and Sweden are more widely used? Is it his tatoo? Either way you racists could learn something from a hardworking forthright family man like Cain!

  • bajafox

Cain just got his bjj blackbelt. He could very well submit JDS by using his superior wrestling to take hime down and submit him. The only way JDS can win is if he hits the lottory like the first fight

    • Lucas Freire

He could on their last fight as much as he can now. Remember that belts are remarks of a fighter’s constant progression, Cain didn’t suddenly become a master at JJ. There’s little difference between a high level Brown belt and a fresh black belt.

  • otto

there is no certainty here, these guys have fought twice and a decisive victory for each, too hard to predict, although i just dont see this rubber match going the distance, which I guess favors JDS
