Junior-dos-Santos-UFC-146-weigh-478x270A heavyweight bout between former title holder Junior dos Santos and up-and-coming contender Stipe Miocic has been added to UFC 173, a UFC official confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Monday evening.

As first reported by the Las Vegas Review Journal, the dos Santos-Miocic affair will stand as the co-main event for the card, which is scheduled for May 24 in Las Vegas.

Coming off the third fight of a trilogy with heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez, dos Santos (16-3) enters UFC 173 looking to get back on the winning track. Most recently, dos Santos came up short in his bid to regain the heavyweight title when he lost via technical knockout to Velasquez last October at UFC 166.

Miocic (11-1) earned a second consecutive win in his last time in the Octagon, going the distance and claiming a unanimous decision over Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC on FOX 10 in January.

UFC 173 is scheduled to be headlined by a middleweight title fight between champion Chris Weidman and challenger Lyoto Machida. Machida was a recent replacement for Vitor Belfort, who stepped down from the fight in the fallout of a Nevada State Athletic Commission ban on therapeutic use exemptions for testosterone-replacement therapy.

Cigano should win this one easy, but for his own well-being, the ufc shouldn’t have him fight for another 6 months so he can fully recover from the beating he took. I know he’s probably chomping at the bit, but he should consider the longevity of his career. War cigano

    • TheCerealKiller

      Stupid.

      • Chicago

what part is stupid? i thought that was intelligent comment.

        • Alex

The part (the whole comment) where the degenerate suggests from the 25 minute fight that happened 4.5 months ago and won’t be ready for a fight in almost 3 months from now LOL.

No indications that Junior had any damage in this fight, so “guest” should start talking out of his mouth, instead of the other place.

          • guest

You’ve obviously haven’t followed fighting enough to know that guys who take beatings like that need a year or more off. Marquez’ trainer made him take a year off after mayweather beat him, and he looked 5 percent as beat up as cigano, so him training 6 months after that beating is dangerous, you simpleton.

          • Alex

LOL don’t give me idiotic comparisons of stupid boxing, where pussies punch each other with huge gloves under maximum rules.
Boxing is not fighting – MMA is fighting, and in MMA real fighters don’t behave like that.

Plus, who decides which beating deserves which rest? You?
LOL you little loser, that thinks that he knows better than Cigano what’s good for him and what is not.

          • Chicago

I am not going to pretend that I know what is best for jr; because I don’t. But truly neither does jr, his trainers, or even doctors that specialize in TBI’s (traumatic brain injures). I work at a level 1 trama hospital in Chicago and I know that our neurological technology is still not advanced enough to let us see everything. I’m not going sit here and pretend that I’m a doctor. I’m not even a RN yet, I’m just a paramedic who is in RN school, but have been working side by side with Dr’s for the past 9 yrs. And I know that 2 people can take the exact same blow and have 2 different symptoms. some symptoms not showing up until yrs later. At the end of the day I’m trying to say is easy with flexing your internet muscles and calling people degenerates. He left a comment he didn’t spit on your mom.

          • Alex

Actually, JDS knows it much better than him and much better than you.
            You know why? Because:
            1. He has been observed by doctors who are more qualified than all your hospital’s personnel altogether;

            2. Because he’s a WARRIOR, and WARRIORS overcome traumas all the time, even if the traumas are neurological.
Mixed martial artists don’t intend to have their bodies healthy – they injure themselves all the time, during training and a fight.

This is common sense talking, something that guy lacked. But he also considered himself a “know-it-all” and was full of it – so I thrown it right into his stupid face.

        • fsunoles10

also pretty stupid to say he wins this fight easy considering stipes credentials and how athletic he is accompanied with about as solid as a chin is gonna get at hw other than lets say roy nelson or mark hunt.

          • Alex

yeah this solid chin has nearly been cracked in half by Struve.

Also Miocic was on the wrong side of the only massive strike the loser de Fries thrown in his entire UFC career LOL

JDS will chew him up and spit him out.

          • fsunoles10

you cant name any other instance can you? you’re not talking about all the punishment he sustained in that fight leading up to that point, why? dude has 1 loss on his record for a reason, you’re just angry im not jumping up and down on jds shaft like yourself.

  • battle ready

Tough challenge for Stipe. If he can do well with dos Santos then he has earned my respect. If he can actually win then maybe he deserves a shot. However, I wouldn’t bet against dos Santos on this one.

    • deepgrim

anyone that does well against junior is worthy of respect. truth is that it is a huge step up in competetion for stipe- i feel its a step too far for him at this stage, but it will give him a good gauge for the top of the division is like

  • Alex

Poor Miocic…he’s an OK HW, for a change in his crappy division overall, but JDS is on another level.

He will not take Junior down and will get KTFO.

  • Dragon Kid

    Looking forward to this fight

    • Kenny Powers

Are u training at Nova Uniao for this one?

      • Dragon Kid

Yes – I go for the knockout

        • abc

Use elbows on Cain, like travis browne does on gonzanga

        • Kenny Powers

          Hahahahahahaha

  • Kenny Powers

Wow HUGE step up for Stipe. Should be a nice stand up fight, i gotta give JDS the TKO Rd. 2 or 3

  • g-wilacuz

i’ll be cheering for stipe but their is no way he will win. i really don’t want to see a velasquez/dos santos 4.

    • Alex

Don’t worry, you may as well get JDS-Browne 1
      ;)

    • Drewjitsu

I don’t think any mma fan wants to see jds-Cain 4 .. Kinda pointless … It should be like Bendo gets no shot at the belt as long as Pettis is champ … Same should apply to jds as long as Cain is champ

      • g-wilacuz

        agreed

  • Drewjitsu

I think the UFC is trying to feed jds someone they know won’t beat him like Cain did so the want another striker to keep it standing so jds can win by ok or murder = same outcome

    • Alex

      LOL what a BS.
JDS has a great takedown defense, and you could see it from his fights with Cain. In order to get his TDs, Cain had to work super hard and to mix it up – and still failed to do it in most of the cases.
A wrestler like Barnett, with his panda striking, would’ve been chewed up and spat out by Junior.

BTW moron, just so you learn something in your life, Miocic is also a wrestler, so cut the BS.

      • deepgrim

alex i think jds is clearly the 2nd best heavyweight out there and there is a small gap to the next tier. while i think jds can ko stipe standing, do you think it would benefit him to try to work on a gnp victory. we have seen him take down big country and carwin before so its in his locker but he likes throwing the fists. i think the problem is that when he prepares to fight cain, cain is not worried about been taking down- only the hands, where as jds is worried about the hands and the takedown. i think jds needs to activate the rest of his arsenal to give cain more to think about. i believe they will meet again!

        • Alex

Nah he better not take Cain down.
Brock took Cain down twice, and Cain came back like nothing – and Brock was a good wrestler with good control and size advantage.
Kongo actually has OK takedowns, he took Cain down and got immediately reversed.
To take Cain down is a shortcut to find himself on the bottom and to eat leather.

Maybe JDS will learn in Nova Uniao how to be big Aldo or big Barao LOL,and to overpower opponents +leg kicks, that might help him.

          • deepgrim

yes he was very good against brock, but brock never fully locked cain up on the ground. he has found cain on top of him before and defended himself very well. i just think that if he gets a GNP victory- it will give cain more to think about, whether or not he actually tries to take cain down or not. if cain believes that jds can take him down, it may affect his stand up slightly. GSP has great success in the stand up as the opposition is worried to hit a big combo and get taking down. He showed the spin kick against hunt. i feel has has to tweek his game slightly to beat cain again- how im not quite sure, cain has so many ways to hurt you

          • Alex

LOL Brock didn’t lock him up because he COULDN’T.
Believe me, if Brock couldn’t, JDS won’t either – maybe if he learns wrestling for 10 more years it will help.

JDS has all he needs, he has TDD and he has striking.
Should learn to be like Aldo/Barao – to be smarter fighter than he is now.

          • deepgrim

well the clinch against the cage was a very big part of the second fight, cain was able to control rounds with that alone.Cain has just been smothering fighters and they cant keep their usual range that they train at. even a failed attempt a usually unseen technique keeps the opposition guessing, maybe timing knees when cain looks for takedowns

  • fsunoles10

i called this fight right after stipe beat gonzaga. but idk why all this talk about miocic not being able to win, dude is a solid wrestler and a golden gloves champ who has proven he can take a shot. i think it will be a damn good fight and i got my boy stipe.

  • AXE MURDERER

This is gonna be a war! Dont count Stipe out in this one so fast! His boxing is better than Cains & Cain out boxed JDS last time. Not to mention Miocic can wrestle as well, should be a great warm up to Weidman vs Machida main event!

    • Alex

LOL @ Miocic boxing better than Cain’s.
      Right, just ask Struve.
      You’re stupid, son.

      • AXE MURDERER

Stipe was a Golden Gloves Boxing Champion. Was Cain? @$$ Wipe

        • Lucas Freire

And Overeem was 99x times the K1 chapion. What’s your point? Stipe got KOed by Struve.

          • inchworm

he was poked in the eye, if you watch the reply

          • Lucas Freire

And was being kept at the bay even before that moment.
While I don’t say that now Stipe would still be KOed by Struve, he was back then.

    • g-wilacuz

stipe got KOed by struve, and was getting outpunched by Gonzaga until Gonzaga gassed in rds 2 and 3. im not a dos santos fan, but stipe boxing doesn’t come close

  • brad king

JDS and micoic gonna be a good one for sure. I got say JDS gonna be in a war but will come out on top.
