Josh Koscheck UFC 157 Pre 17-478x270An injury has forced UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck off the UFC 163 card and out of the scheduled fight with Demian Maia.

UFC officials announced the news on Friday, but no further details about the nature of the injury were provided.

Koscheck (17-7) has lost back-to-back fights and was looking to rebound against Maia on the August 3 fight card.

Maia (18-4) was looking to extend his winning streak to four consecutive fights.  Since dropping down from the middleweight division, Maia has won three fights in a row as a welterweight with wins over Dong Hyun Kim, Rick Story and Jon Fitch.

Maia has been removed from the card, and it is unknown how long Koscheck will be sidelined.

UFC 163 takes place at HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.  The main card airs live on pay-per-view with preliminary action airing live on FX and streaming live on Facebook.

It never will, it is going to be part of the sport forever.

Yea I know…it just sucks how often it is happening. The UFC should really start thinking about having alternates ready way before. 300+ fighters on the roster, might as well get some of them ready in case of injuries

You’re definitely right the only thing is with sports this physical almost every fighter gets injured at least once a year, with that after fights guys need downtime to live their lives to remain happy and still be human.

They can tone down the training, but if the other guy is pushing full speed and has a great camp he’s going to win because he is better trained and in better shape.

It’s just inevitable, but at the same time if your a fan of the sport and not just seeing your favorite fighters you can always enjoy seeing the new breed of the sport because these openings give a lot of guys opportunities.

. . . to be replaced by Nick Diaz

    • Stefano ‘Zwonimir’ Sega Nogaro

I think is too late for a working visa in Brazil right now, probably they’ll pull out Maia too

  • christopher Breuer

Put Nick Diaz in there hopefully its not too soon.

    • The Best Eva

      That would be awesome.

diaz vs maia would be sick actually.

Koscheck really needed a win and Maia really needed this fight to help put him as a contender in the division. Although he’s been beaten by GSP twice, a win over Koscheck would have been real nice for Maias resume. And I 100% agree with everyone on here, Nick Diaz against Maia would be a sick fight; although I’d put my money on Diaz.

Maia vs Lawler do it do it now

    • The Best Eva

No! Robbie can’t be set up for a loss!

  • Lucas Freire

It beats me on how Maia with 3 wins in a row and his last win against Fitch was supposed to fight against Koscheck.
I think Koscheck is a great talent, even though nobody likes him I think he’s a great wrestler with solid hands and his loss to Hendricks was debatable…But…
Fitch should be above him on the ranks, and he shouldn’t fight Maia, who is on a 3-win-streak against guys like Story and Fitch.

i’ll probably catch some flack for this, but i can’t help but feel like kos didn’t want any part of this match

Is this a free card on Fox Sports or whatever channel it is on this year? Phil Davis, lol

  • james j

I honestly thought Josh would be a UFC champ. The guy has all the skills. He should be a ground and pound guy and get away from the stand up. Fight like GSP, it works.

Good. This fight made absolutely no sense
