Joseph Benavidez Has Always Considered Himself the No. 1 UFC Flyweight Contender

Posted on by Andrew Potter

Joseph Benavidez UFC 156 Post UFC flyweight Joseph Benavidez picked up his third straight victory in the Octagon of the year on Wednesday night in Brazil. He hasn’t lost since he dropped a split decision to current champion Demetrious Johnson just over a year ago.

Benavidez dominated in his first-round TKO victory over Brazilian Jussier Formiga at UFC Fight Night 28, revealing post-fight that he’s always felt like the No. 1 contender at flyweight.

“I’ve believed that I was the No. 1 contender really since I lost,” Benavidez said. “I was the next best guy in the division to Demetrious (Johnson).

“He’s been a great champion, but I’ve proven I can beat, and not only beat, but finish the top guys in the division.”

The 29-year-old, who trains out of Team Alpha Male, isn’t one to campaign for fights, though. He, of course, wants another crack at the belt that is currently wrapped around Johnson’s waist, but he is content to wait for the UFC’s decision on who he will fight next.

“At the end of the day, I could bark for it or not say anything, but it’s not up to me. Whatever the UFC decides, I’ll respect it and I’ll 100-percent be ready for it.”
