UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo won a unanimous nod from the judges at UFC 179 in Rio on Saturday night. Despite wearing the visible signs of a difficult fight across his face, the champion broke down his fight with Chad Mendes, saying that after five rounds, he was confident he had done more than enough to earn the victory.

He also addressed the hottest topic of conversation in Brazil this week… Conor McGregor.

I thought Chad won by a hair, but I never want to see a title change hands on a close decision. When it’s this close, I give it to the champ every time.

    • Lucas Freire

You mean you saw Chad getting one of the first three rounds?

      • Matte

I think the judges got it spot on.

        Very good fight.

Aldo never been pushed like that, he should of had a point took away
or disqualified for punching after the bell

        • shakejunt

ok then mendes should’ve gotten a point taken for excessive eye pokes.

          • uncle

That makes no sense the eye pokes were unintentional
yeah that is why the ref caught on to Aldo’s act

          • shakejunt

yeah i’m sure aldo’s whole plan was to land controversial shots, it was his only way to win.

          • uncle

He won the fight he was awesome

        • Lucas Freire

Why I get the feeling everybody is turning a blind eye to the eyepokes and nutshots? While these punches are up to judgement, Dana defended Aldo on the matter, the eyepokes were there.

          • uncle

Its wrong on both sides eyepokes happen and unfortunate in a fight
punching some after the bell it shows lack of discipline.Lets say a prelim fighter
did this do you think Dana would still defend?

    • Elsa

Chad almost got finished in round 3. He landed more clean shots than Aldo was used to, but after watching the fight 3 times it’s clear Aldo won and had him in more danger overall. It was a decent war of attrition, but Chad never came close to finishing it like Aldo did. Those combinations in the first round were a thing of beauty, and I’m not talking about the ones after the bell.

Chad won round 4 at least, I still think it’s pathetic the judges didn’t see that.

      • shakejunt

that’s actually exactly what they judges saw. unanimous 49-46, no?

  • shakejunt

aldo controlled the pace and landed the more meaningful strikes. can’t really score the takedowns if they don’t lead anywhere.

  • Jason Priest

Aldo clearly won. Dude’s a beast.

    • uncle

      Best fight on the card

  • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

Throwing punches after the bell is cheating, not championship

  • kissmyass

look at their faces and tell me Aldo won. BS!!! He got his ass kicked, plain and simple.

  • kissmyass

also kept winning to the ref like a little bitch.
