Frankie Edgar will get the next crack at the UFC featherweight title and he faces champion Jose Aldo on Super Bowl weekend at UFC 156.

The news was revealed via UFC Tonight on Tuesday evening from UFC President Dana White.

The card will be Feb 2, 2013 and is expected to take place in Las Vegas.

Aldo returns to action following a motorcycle accident that sidelined him from his scheduled bout in October at UFC 153. The featherweight champion last competed in January with a knockout win over Chad Mendes at UFC 142.

By the time he returns in February, it will have been more than a year since the champion has competed and he has a tough test ahead of him.

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will drop down to 145lbs and get an immediate shot at Aldo in his first fight at featherweight.

Edgar dropped back-to-back fights to Benson Henderson in 2012 as he lost his UFC lightweight title, and the subsequent rematch despite outcries of bad judging costing him at least the second fight.

Now the New Jersey native will look to add another gold belt to his resume when he faces Jose Aldo in February at UFC 156.

This is bullshit! Just as ridiculous as Chael’s title shot. Erik Koch needs to speak up considering he’s the true #1 Contender and had the fight already signed before both were injured. Nice to see fighters earning they shots at the title these days *sarcasm*

Agree with Mike. Frankie is coming of a 2 back-to-back L’s, no one knows how he will fit at 145 and he will take on Jose? He should fight Koch or someone else from top 5 of 145 before, to prove that he deserves a shot at 145 :/ That’s my opinion

Cry baby Edgar gets his way again.

I hope Jose whips the **** out of him.

This fight will be awesome, nothing like the sonnen situation , in another world Edgar is still lightweight champ and 2-0 in his last 2 fights

Im glad about his fight. After Frankie vs Henderson 1 Dana White was p***ed off because he thought Frankie won. He says it in the post event presser. After Edgar vs Henderson 2 I was p***ed off. Henderson lost that fight in every way a person can lose a fight. Frankie landed more punches, kicks takedowns, submission attempts he dropped him in the second round and by the 5th Bendo was pretty much afraid to move. I think Aldo should be going up a weight class to challenge Frankie but judges are just thick in this sport. Also the competition Frankie has faced is a notch above the competition Aldo has faced. Also some people think Frankie should face competition at 145 before he gets a title shot but Bendo got a title shot off 3 boring Gray Maynard style decisions and Chael talked his way into a title shot and who had jon jones fought before his title shot?

I haven’t seen the second fight but Edgar lost the first one by a mile. Of course if he had actually finished the fight, we wouldn’t be having this debate.

Finished the fight? you mean like Henderson has never done in UFC? The judges gave the decision of a boring fight to the guy who was just after 3 boring decisions

things don’t always go your way when you’re a points fighter, get over it

          • stevemcz11

not even when you score more points 🙂

    knock on wood!

This is going to be a great fight! I like both fighters and feel that Aldo’s aggresiveness is going to be huge, the guy has finished all his fights with the exception of two. I predict 2nd round TKO, Edgar just doesn’t have the chin and is not faster than Aldo…Great match up though

honestly Ive been waiting years for this Match up too Happen, Edgar Deserves a shot he should of took the Last between Henderson. The Cheal Situation is totally different Cheal Got Tko’ed Frankie only lost by a split. Edgar is going to take the 145 belt.

He took the first against Henderson aswell. A lot of Henderson fans cling to the first fight ive noticed but Henderson lost 4 of the rounds in the first fight. The rounds were close but the rounds also were scored by compustrike and the judges didnt see what the computers did. I trust the computers personally because thay have a much better record
