Jose Aldo and Manny Gamburyan at WEC 51And the hits just keep on coming….

Within hours of the news that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was out of UFC 153 due to injury, now UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has fallen by the wayside as well.

According to UFC president Dana White, Aldo has been forced out of his main event bout against Frankie Edgar due to a foot injury.

Aldo was facing Edgar in the main event on the UFC 153 fight card slated for Oct. 13 in Rio. Edgar was already a replacement for Erik Koch, who also fell off the show due to injury.

The main event and co-main event for UFC 153 have now both been scrapped within a couple of hours, and no answers appear ready for what the UFC will do to answer to this latest upheaval.

“Main and co main in the same day!! Another amazing day at the UFC,” wrote White on Twitter. “We have some work to do.”

UFC officials have yet to make any other announcements regarding the UFC 153 card or who will remain to serve as main event or co-main event for the upcoming October show.

    Incredible.

    This is getting pretty annoying

I agree. Even though it’s not really anybody’s fault, this seriously sucks

It is not a coincidence either.

Not too long ago the fighters didn’t have insurance coverage.

And they used to show up the their fights most of the time. MUCH much more often than they do now because they HAD to fight, needed to get paid, etc.

Now that fighters are making better cash and they have insurance, fighters are dropping out of fights left and right. It is not like all of the sudden there are 9 times as many injuries as there were 3 years ago, but back then they’d fight with a boo boo and now they won’t. and it is going to the main event and the high profile guys that drop out of fights, because they are the ones who can afford to wait to get paid, not the hungry new dudes that need that money to pay their rent, those guys will fight unless they have a broken leg.

        • KBEsq

Yeah, I think the UFC needs to do something to combat this. I don’t think fighters are making up injuries, but I do think they are simply more inclined to drop out if things aren’t 100% (this is a general comment, and not specifically aimed at Aldo’s injury).

There’s no perfect way to accomplish combating this, but perhaps some kind of show bonus? Maybe White could give reasonable bonuses (maybe a 15% bonus) if you make your originally planned fight.

And I am not suggesting that fighters should fight injured. I think the bonus would encourage fighters to train safe so they would not get injured in the first place. Right now, there’s no motivation for fighters to not train as hard as they can, and the hell with the consequences. If they get injured, they can just pull out.

  • bajafox

Saw this on Danas FB, these injuries are getting way out of hand.

I’m just glad Jones isn’t on that card, might have to cancel that one too.

    • MaritalArtist

      Lol!!!!!

  • longtime fan

barring any freak accidents fighters need to be held accountable for injuries that they suffer this close to an event. The main culprit is fighters just training to hard. Others sports like football are physically demanding as well, but even in the nfl this doesnt happen that much. most of the injuries in football usually happen during the actual game, not in the practices leading up to the game. Fighters need to start weighing on the risk assesment of each training session, especially when it gets this close to the event.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000493632092 anthonylopez

There’s no way they’re ever going to have a policy against fighters training too hard. Fighters just need to be smarter when they have fights approaching

      • longtime fan

Exactly, they have to be smarter… they need to use some risk management. Maybe the ufc wont implement any policy against fighters for being irresponsible about their health, but their needs something to be done about it. It is ridiculous.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordan.arthur.73 jordanarthur

    Massively dislike this news

  • BlackDog2009

wow, these guys are just irresponsible, and their injuries come at covenient times too, its bizarre, and just plain stupid

    • acspida#244

Bizarre is right. What the hell is going on?!?!?. We used to look forward to fights months in advance…..now it seems the set the card, then wait until a week befothis is getting just plain annoying.

  • johnnylopes

why dont you jus call the title… win this belt get a payday and fight 1 time a year championship

  • felix

Damn! This is the year of the disappointment in mma.

  • Mario

    Damn

From now on, I’m not looking forward to any fights. If they happen, they happen.

This is beyond ridiculous at this point.

Silva vs. Weidman should be the new main event!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000493632092 anthonylopez

Oh my God, shut up! Weidman has an opponent, a legitimate one. Get off of his sack. He stopped his little campaign trail, but his fanboys are still annoying

      • longtime fan

his anti-fan boys are actually the annoying ones. His fans just have legitimate opinions on what they want to see. what these comment sections are all about.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000493632092 anthonylopez

I am in no way anti-Weidman. I just feel he tried to convince everybody he was the number one contender, instead of waiting for his time. One top ten opponent win doesn’t make you the undisputed challenger for the belt. I don’t mind Weidman, but I don’t care for the whining for the belt or whining by his fans. That is all

  • MaritalArtist

Lemme guess…. same foot that was swollen when he had the motorcycle accident? It better not be, and if it is, he might have postponed the news because he thought we had the memory of a fruit fly (2 seconds). No, Aldo, we did not forget that you’ve already damaged your foot recently, while doing a very stupid thing for a Featherweight Undisputed World Champion to do right before a fight. Come on, man!

  • http://www.combatsciencemma.com CombatScienceMMA

This sucks. Aldo & Edgar was a huge fight. And Jackson is out to now. The only upside of injuries to well known fighters is that it gives other guys a shot to step in and become known. I wish them both the best and a healthy recovery.

  • MuayThaiFood

They need to get rid of fight of the night, submission and knockout bonuses and start giving them out for just showing up.

  • bajafox

Dana should just put a mediocre card together and put it on for free on FX or FOX, or even FUEL

  • stevemcz11

    G*DD*MM*T M*TH*RF*CK*N M*TH*RF*CK*R!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MaritalArtist

Here’s one long shot: How about Silvs vs Jones? Just put Sonnen in vs Vitor, and make the superfight in Brazil, to give Silva better chances, although I do think that fight is pretty evenly matched. They can fight at a 200 lb catchweight.

    • JAVbal1633

You act like this “longshot” of yours hasnt been addressed about 50 times in the last month. RIGHT NOW THEY WONT FIGHT EACH OTHER. Face facts sorry. And secondly why does a fight in Brazil give him a better chance? And why would they neccessarily make the fight somewhere to give Silva a better chance?

      • Cptmats

Its actually a good idea. Silva would highly motivated fighting in front of his home crowd. It would be great main event and co-main event ! It would prob generate at least a million ppv buys and would be able to fill a 100,000+ seat soccer stadium. And as far as them not wanting to fight each other right now, that just means ” im gonna need a little more $$$”

  • julianmoran

Edgar is fighting the Korean Zombie, that´s a good replacement. The winner should get the next title shot.

    • julianmoran

      Misinformed.

    • http://www.combatsciencemma.com CombatScienceMMA

I like this fight. The only bad loss for Zombie is getting KO’d by George Roop. Other than that he deserved a number 1 contender fight and this fight is a big name for him. Other than Aldo though, I see Edgar ruling that division. But I could be wrong b/c some of those dudes are faster than him and can really push the pace. He was fine at 155 IMO. Just b/c he had some close fights doesn’t mean he should drop down. But I can’t blame him for dropping down getting offered a title shot.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000493632092 anthonylopez

Since when is he fighting the Korean Zombie? I’ve heard this fight suggested, I haven’t seen anything saying it’s official

  • pooby

This is great! Now we just need:

    1. Chael Sonnen to say he’ll step in and fight Frankie

    2. Frankie turns down the Sonnen fight and Dana cancels the event.

    3. We get a new topic of conversation for the next three weeks!

    • stevemcz11

That happened once. Jones turned down the fight. Get over it!!

      • pooby

I was over it a long time ago. My post was meant to be sarcastic.

        • dathump

          I thought it was funny.
senario 2- Frankie accepts, Sonnens parole office wont let him leave the states, Dana cancels.

        • triangle choke

I’m really starting to hate the new fighters insurance. Dana White is a sharp dude, but he is in denile if he truely believes that these injuries are not related to the new insurance.

  • Iamrozylo

Fighters insurance may be the worst thing the UFC did.

    • stevemcz11

very well said lamrozylo! I could not agree more!

    • http://www.facebook.com/mark.mcdowall.14 Beaver

I have to agree. At first I thought it was a great idea…and in essence it really is for the fighters. But I think its way to easy for them to pull out now. Think back when Chuck, Randy etc were fighting…how many injuries did you see back then?!?!? There were a few…but not multiple injuries on EVERY card…

Is it that the guys are training too hard? Or are the fighters becoming softer? Did the insurance cause these guys to find an easy out for a fight?

Who knows…but something needs to be done and QUICK!!! This is getting annoying…

  • RubeKegal

    Aldo = DUCKING EDGAR!!!!!
Matyushenko = Knows he cant beat Hamill
Rampage “injured” to f*ck Dana’s anus

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000493632092 anthonylopez

Bahahaha. There is absolutely no way Aldo is ducking Edgar, just like there’s no way the Janitor is ducking Hamill. Just because Matt Hamill had a movie made about him does not make him a feared man in the UFC lol. But I totally agree with the Rampage comment

    • Booker T

      Right on Rube.

  • http://www.facebook.com/stanislav.alyas stanislavalyas

Machida vs sonnen would be nice but it really dosen’t mean much i guess if machida wins he has to be next for the LHT if sonnen wins well never hear the end of it i dont mind though chaels g but i think maybe silva vs weidman isnt the worse idea even though pretty hard to promot the fight on short notice but i just dont think anderson is gonna say yes he tured down that fight before hes prob gonna turn ut down agian i no JDS is fighting soon on. A diff card but maybe he could step up hes the only brazilian champ that hasnt fought in brazial(as the ufc champion)so maybe JDS vs valazquez or overeem would be nice

  • dj_H_E_A_V_Y

Just pull Melendez off the Sept 29th Strikeforce card and have him fight Frankie in Rio.
