Following his bout with Diego Saraiva at UFC 73, much speculation has been circulating concerning the health of former Ultimate Fighter competitor Jorge Gurgel due to a slugfest that resulted in the pair earning Fight of the Night from the UFC.
When reached for comment by MMAWeekly’s Damon Martin, Gurgel confirmed that he is having surgery to wire his broken jaw shut but he will be able to train even with the injury.
“It happened at the beginning of the 2nd round,” said Gurgel. “I knew I broke my jaw but there was nothing I could do about it then so I just kept fighting.”
Rumors circulated that Gurgel sustained many other injuries during the bout that forced him to go to the hospital including urinating blood that worried many fans about his overall health following the fight.
Gurgel was quick to comment that following the fight, the broken jaw was the only real injury he sustained and all the other rumors concerning his health were simply not true.
Time will tell following the surgery how long it will be before Gurgel is back in the Octagon but he will continue to work at his school in Cincinnati Ohio as the city is also preparing the imminent arrival of the UFC in October.
