Jon Fitch’s time on the sidelines appears to have come to an end as he is now set to face former NCAA champion Johny Hendricks at UFC 141 in December.

Sources close to the match-up confirmed the bout to MMAWeekly.com, and it has been verbally agreed to by both fighters. ESPN.com initially reported the bout.

Jon Fitch gets back in action after several months away from the sport because of shoulder surgery that put him on the sidelines.

Fitch fought to a draw with B.J. Penn in his last fight in February, and was going to have a rematch with him in July before the injury put him off the card and under the knife. Now recovered, Fitch was lobbying for a fight on the UFC 139 card in San Jose, which is where he trains at American Kickboxing Academy, but the promotion had a different idea.

The man who will try to hand Fitch only his 2nd loss in the UFC will be two-time NCAA champion Johny Hendricks.

Hendricks comes to UFC 141 on a two fight win streak with victories over T.J. Waldburger and Mike Pierce. The former Oklahoma State wrestler has also picked up wins over Charlie Brenneman and former TUF champion Amir Sadollah since coming to the UFC.

The fight with Fitch will definitely be Hendricks’ biggest step up on competition, but his opportunity to break through to a top five fighter.

The bout between Fitch and Hendricks is expected to take place on the UFC 141 card headlined by former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem making his UFC debut against Brock Lesnar.

… I guess fitch decided he wanted a warm up fight instead of continuing to call out champions? Kinda went the opposed way on this one.

  • bajafox

Kinda thinking the same thing… He has a lot to lose if he doesn’t win this fight

warm up my ass ,this guy is seen by several experts as the best pure wrestler in the ufc.a upset could easily happen.

The condition should be he has to FINISH his next fight in order to get another title shot. Jon Fitch can’t expect them to give him another crack if he just keeps taking fighters to decisions.

The guy couldn’t beat GSP the first time, and he wouldn’t do it a second time around.

What has he done different since that fight?

    Nothing!

    Same ‘ol same ‘ol.

    Grind out a win.

    Fuck Fitch!
    Boring ass fighter!

    zZZZzZz

Mario, I’m not saying these comments on not finishing a fight for Fitch isn’t true… but, really if you look at it, who has GSP finished? He didn’t even finish Hardy and everyone else has, he didn’t finish Kos even after 3 rounds after he broke Kos’s orbital bone… and on and on. You can’t rip one with out ripping the other.

hendricks is pretty good. its a dangerous fight for fitch.
but if you wanna talk about boring fighters then they should take the belt away from GSP…
i actually think these guys wont be wresting too much… hendricks does pretty well in the clinch and i think this is gonna make for a good stand up fight

Fitch hasn’t lost since ’03 … granted yes… not exciting. But, he does deserve another shot at the title… LOL Granted if he does get that shot they should put it in a gym somewhere and don’t show it to anyone, just post the result, except they could use it in sleep clinics as a help for insomnia.
