If he’s not getting a title fight, Jon Fitch is committed to staying busy.

The UFC welterweight contender and American Kickboxing Academy fighter has agreed to face Jake Ellenberger in a main card fight at UFC 126 on Feb. 5 during Super Bowl weekend.

The fight was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the match-up on Monday, stating verbal agreements are in place, but bout agreements have yet to be issued. The fight was initially reported by MMAJunkie.com.

Jon Fitch (23-3) has been on a quest to get back to a welterweight title shot since losing to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 87 over two years ago. That mission has seen Fitch pick up five additional wins in a row, the most recent of which was a dominant decision over Thiago Alves at UFC 117 in August.

While there was talk about Fitch getting a crack at the winner of the upcoming UFC 124 fight between Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck, the promotion opted to give the next shot to new UFC welterweight Jake Shields instead. Never one to cry over spilled milk, Fitch told MMAWeekly Radio last week that he would continue to challenge himself and face whoever the UFC put in front of him.

“The thing is, in life you can’t focus on the uncontrollable,” said Fitch. “You can focus your attention on the things you can control, otherwise you’ll drive yourself crazy. If you can’t control it there’s no reason to worry about it. I’m just not going to worry about that. I’m just going to worry about becoming the best possible fighter I can be, get out there and meet as many fans as I can, be the best representative of a UFC fighter as I can, and everything’s going to take care of itself in the end.”

Stepping in to challenge Fitch and trying to hand him his second loss in the Octagon will be fellow wrestler Jake Ellenberger (22-5). With an impressive record to his credit, Ellenberger has inserted himself as a viable force at 170 pounds in the UFC, with wins over Mike Pyle and John Howard.

Now training at the Reign Training Center alongside fighters like Mark Munoz and Krzysztof Soszynski, Ellenberger will look to up his game when he faces Fitch in February.

The welterweight bout between Fitch and Ellenberger is likely to be featured on the UFC 126 main card headlined by middleweight champion Anderson Silva defending his belt against Vitor Belfort.

Great opportunity for Jake, kind of a snub to Fitch in a way.
