Johny Hendricks vs. Martin Kampmann Officially Set as Co-Main Event for UFC 154

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Johny HendricksThe UFC is still awaiting the official word from Georges St-Pierre that he will be ready to go for UFC 154 in Montreal, but the card now officially has its co-main event.

As expected, welterweights Johny Hendricks and Martin Kampmann will square off in the co-featured bout on the upcoming card headed to Montreal on Nov. 17.

UFC officials made the announcement via UFC Tonight on Tuesday.

Both competitors will look to make a statement as the co-main event with the expected feature bout pitting welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre against Carlos Condit.

Johny Hendricks has been on a tear as of late, picking up wins over Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck, while Kampmann has looked impressive as well with finishes over Thiago Alves and Jake Ellenberger.

Now the two welterweight contenders will fight with a potential title shot awaiting the winner.

    Perfect #2 contender fight

(to be the guy that gets demolished by Anderson after he takes GSP’s belt)

yeah- there are a few fairly big ifs in there, I know. People need to stay healthy and sign contracts etc… but that is the most profitable scenario and the most likely winners.

They’ve already said if Anderson and GSP fight it will be a catch weight with no one’s belt on the line. WIn or lose (I think win by boring decision) GSP will still be the WW champ, if (when) he defeats Condit.

There’s actually been a change in that story of late and discussion of Anderson going to 170 and fighting for the belt:

        *******
Report: Anderson Silva contemplating vacating middleweight title, move to welterweight to fight Georges St. Pierre

        ****

and GSP is gonna decision the ish out of Condit….

Anderson Silva isn’t going to go down to Welterweight. He’s going to retire as Middleweight champ. The idea that he would drop the belt and move down this late in his career is silly.

But I do agree the winner of Kampmann Hendricks deserves the next shot at the WW belt.

This is a great match. The winner clearly deserves a title shot. Both guys are beast. Kampmann might have the edge.

agreed about this being a great match, but i go back and forth as to who has the edge.

Good fight. I think Kampmann has this all the way. Hendrix is going to try to stand with Kampmann because he has a lot of faith in his stand up.

One thing that worries me is that Kampmann tends to get his butt kicked in the early parts of the fight. I hope he doesn’t get hit with a huge left.
