With Khabib Nurmagomedov out of UFC 187 due to a knee injury, John “The Bull” Makdessi has stepped up to face Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on the May 23 fight card in Las Vegas.

Makdessi (13-3) is a nine-fight UFC veteran. The Canadian has won four of his last five fights and is coming off first-round finish of Shane Campbell at UFC 186 on April 25.

Cerrone (27-6, 1 NC) is riding a seven-fight winning streak and is ranked third in the UFC’s 155-pound division. He’s coming off a razor-close decision win over former champion Benson Henderson at UFC Fight Night 59 in January.

UFC 187 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 23 and features two title fights. Top 205-pound contenders Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson fight for the vacant light heavyweight title in the main event. Middleweight titleholder Chris Weidman puts his belt on the line against Vitor Belfort in the co-main event.

Jon Jones was originally expected to defend his title against Johnson but was stripped of the belt and suspended indefinitely by the UFC after his alleged involvement in a felony hit-and-run in Albuquerque on April 26.

Any fight with Cowboy will be good and this one should be great. A huge opportunity for Makdessi.

I like this matchup. Makdessi does not shy away from a fight, and his record is pretty good. Cerrone has the experience edge and an advantage in terms of the people he has competed against, but I see this as a fun fight to watch.

Nothing makes up for the loss of the future champ.

this sucks. was really looking forward to the eagle’s return

Nurmagomedov is a wuss! He’s using the knee excuse to duck Cerrone because he knows cowboy will ride him really good. The coward eagle is avoiding cowboy and hoping Dana won’t make him fight him so he can leap frog others and get a title shot sooner. What a freaking moron for a guy that is talking too much.

Cowboy would be mauled in a fight with Kaibib. That being said Cowboy is one of my favorite fighters. I think Javier Mendez should wright a book, how to keep your fighter’s relevant without fighting.

Easy win for cowboy, this fight makes no sense and does nothing for him.
