Jamie Varner WEC 46Five years after his last appearance in the UFC, Jamie Varner is getting the call back. He will face Edson Barboza at UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas, replacing an injured Evan Dunham.

Sources close to the match-up confirmed the new fight with MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday. UFC officials also confirmed the fight late Tuesday evening.

Following a brief stint in the UFC, Varner exited the promotion and moved over to the fledgling WEC organization, where he soon became lightweight champion. Varner twice defended his belt before losing the strap to now current UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson.

Since that time, Varner has bounced around several regional promotions and most recently has picked up back-to-back wins in the XFC, defeating Drew Fickett and Nate Jolly, both in the first round.

Now Varner will get a return trip to the UFC with no easy task in front of him as he faces rising star Edson Barboza at UFC 146 in May.

  • Thought Varner retired… like 3 times since he left the WEC.

Hope he can make it an entertaining fight.

    • MuayThaiFood

Well, if entertaining means watching Barboza beat him like a red headed step child then yeah, I’d say it’s going to be a barn burner.

    One and done

    this makes me sad

    • KBEsq

Agreed, this was an awesome fight. I really like Dunham and Barboza is a killer. I was really looking forward to this fight.

  • redtornado

id fake an injury too if i had to face barboza

    • adam1848

dunham is a beast. that would have been a good fight. i do think varner is underrated. not that he is great or anything, but the guy has a decent game. he could make this a scrap.

      • adam1848

        but yes, barboza will win.

  • Mario

Was nobody else available for this? Crappy fight for Barboza IMO. He gains nothing by beating Jamie Varner (which I’m sure he’ll do). Too bad Melvin Guillard is already tied up fighting Fabrício Camões, or else that would have been a good fight.

    Edson via TKO

I also agree Barboza has nothing to gain from this fight and it is a huge opportunity for Varner.

    • RubeKegal

Also agreed…I would never want to fight Varner though because if I lose, then i’d be the guy who lost to the guy who lost a fight to a guy who did gay porn.

        Funny and true!

Even Dunham is an absolute monster and it really sucks that he’s out because this fight could have brought him to the next level

  • Damn Varner do they hate you getting fed to Barboza in your first fight back in UFC… Barboza by devastatng KO

  • D-rail

What? Joe Silva couldn’t of swapped fighters, and made Varner fight Camoes so that Melvin vs Barbosa could have been a possibility?? I don’t get that man and his matchmaking. Melvin crushed Evan, so that would of been the answer. Melvin would of brought it seeing that he really needs a win, and the fans would of loved it.

  • Towers66

Sigh. I really wanted to see Dunham submit Barbosa.

  • phrankthetank

Everyone loses in this one unless Varner can get the upset.

  • pooby

Varner is a douche, this is gonna be fun!
