Short notice worked well for Jamie Varner‘s return to the UFC, so why not try it twice?

The former WEC champion who stormed back into the UFC with a knockout victory over previously undefeated fighter Edson Barboza at UFC 146 will now take another short notice fight as he steps in to face Joe Lauzon at UFC on Fox 4 on Aug 4.

UFC officials announced the new match-up on late Wednesday night.

Following his exit from the WEC after 2010, Varner toiled around several regional promotions and actually contemplated retirement before revamping his career by joining the MMA Lab and his old team at Arizona Combat Sports.

The rejuvenation plan worked as Varner stomped two opponents in a row before shocking the world with his first round knockout over Edson Barboza.

Now Varner will take another short notice fight as he faces Joe Lauzon at UFC on Fox 4, following the departure of his original opponent Terry Etim when he was claimed by injury.

Varner meets Lauzon on the undercard of the UFC on Fox 4 show taking place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Aug 4.

Etim or Varner… Joe stiill wins by Sub

If Lauzon tries to stand he’s getting ko’d again

This is actually a great fight. I like it better than the original. Both have good stand up and both are good on the ground. Varner is a little more dynamic standing up, and Lauzon is a little more dynamic with subs. Very good match up. I think Varner wins by decision.

I guess that UFC 1 fight win streak comes to an end for Varner.

Varner has had a spotted past, but he just knocked out one of the most promising fighters in the UFC. If anything, I think Varner has the edge in this.

I have no problem with you cheering for Varner. I just dont believe he is at Lauzon’s level. Guess we will find out soon enough.

A lot of people counting Varner out on this one. It surprises me because if he can beat the red-hot Edson Barboza, why wouldn’t he be able to do the same to the lately hot-cold Joe Lauzon? My money’s on Varner for this fight.

My respect for Varner is growing. Taking another short term notice fight against a pretty good fighter is commendable. As with most Lauzon fights, Lauzon will TKO or submit Varner in the first round, or gas out and lose.

Varner is going to win this one and the belt. He sold his soul.

  • Varner takes this with better everything except possibly submissions.

joe lauzon is a step down don’t you think? varner beat the shit out of barboza and he was undefeated…varner should be fighting a top ten opponent…he is a former champion after all

  • I like this fight more now that Varner is in for Etim. I agree Varner just put himself into some elite company by beating the undefeated Barboza. But I think this is a favor to the UFC after for giving him another opportunity. If Varner wins, I think he is back for good.
