Ronda Rousey

Ronda Rousey hasn’t set foot in the UFC Octagon yet, but may already be the biggest crossover star mixed martial arts has ever seen.

“People can say whatever they want about(Rousey); she shouldn’t be headlining or whatever. I don’t give a (expletive) if you’re Royce Gracie, if you are Dan Henderson, or (Lyoto) Machida, Tito (Ortiz), Chuck (Liddell), go through the laundry list of guys who have been stars in this company.  Nobody in the history of this company will have more new media following them than Ronda Rousey will,” UFC president Dana White told MMAWeekly.com.

Rousey, an Olympic Judo Medalist, is undefeated in her mixed martial arts career.  She has finished every opponent in the first round by the same move, an armbar submission.

“Already the stories she’s done: Time Magazine, she’s one of the 30 for 30 Forbes athletes.  She’s in there with Lebron James, Real Sports on HBO.  The L.A. Times is following her for a month and doing a font page story on her,” said White.

“The list goes on and on and on of media that has never, ever covered this event, or have never given us the coverage they’re giving us for Ronda Rousey, in the history of the sport.  Not just the 13 years that we’ve been here, all the way back to the old days,” added the UFC president.

White officially announced at the UFC on Fox 5: Henderson vs. Diaz pre-fight press conference that Rousey is the first UFC women’s bantamweight champion, and presented her with the belt.

Rousey will defend her women’s bantamweight belt against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157 in the main event at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Feb. 23.  She and Carmouche will make history as the first female fight inside the UFC Octagon.

Rousey got a big mouth and needs to maybe just shut up and fight Cyborg who will destroy Rhonda. Rousey also needs to marry Nick Diaz.

This is silly. Gina Carano is easily more popular to the mainstream. Aside from her big TV ratings in a MMA promotion not UFC (no one has done that not even Rhonda) to dating Superman. Gina is leaps ahead of Rhonda. Gina is what they are hoping happens with Rhonda (that and she stays fighting). Gina’s accomplishments include:

She was profiled in a feature story for the ESPN series E:60. She was voted “Hottest Woman In America” by Big Biz Magazine in the Spring 2008 issue.[45] On May 13, 2008, “Gina Carano” was the fastest-rising search on Google and third most searched person on Yahoo!.[4][46]

She was ranked as #5 on the “Top Ten Influential Women of 2008″ list on Yahoo![47]

In May 2009, it was announced that Carano was ranked #16 in Maxim’s Hot 100 list.

In April 2012 Carano became the first recipient of the Chick Norris (Best Female Action Star) Award, given by ActionFest to the female action star of the year.[48]

She is one of the cover athletes along with Serena Williams[49] for the October 19, 2009 edition of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue. Carano and Williams were two of the athletes featured in a book by Dana Rasmussen

She was a nominee for the 2013 Critics Choice Awards for best actress in an action movie for Haywire. http://www.criticschoice.com/movie-awards/

yeah all of the stuff you cited, except for the “Critics Choice Award” happened in 2008 thru 2009.

Gina retired from MMA after getting destroyed by Cyborg. She never faced any tough competition.

      Ronda actually got skills.

      • Mark McDowall

But who has Rousey faced so far? The same result will happen if she faces Cyborg. She may not quit MMA but chances are she will get whooped too.

  • dan

If they cant make Rousey/Cyborg should she win, I hope theyll go after someone like Coenen.
So if the UFC isnt booking any women fights til they see what happens with this fight, what do people like Tate and Kaufmann do for $?

anyone else tired of RR ?

    • JimmyPettishardo

      Not really.

But MMAweekly loves to write unimportant articles as news.

How is RR an MMA “crossover” star?????

  • kennybro

i wish invicta fc was getting as much attention as rousey is getting. then you have the other women that are supposedly signed to the ufc but don’t have any upcoming fights even in rumor. i hope this division sorts or defaults to inicta fc. (lol, right?)

    • Mark McDowall

Exactly. Invicta is an actual “womens division”. As of right now, Rousey is a one woman show. The best thing the UFC could have done/do was partner up with Invicta and actually create a woman’s division with more than 1 woman in it. If Rousey gets past Carmouche…then what? Its going to be another StrikeForce situation, where they throw random ass opponents in to title fights because there is no one else.

So tired of RR . Not interested in checking out the event… hope she loses this hype train will end …

  • Maddawgmar

And if she fights Cyborg and rips her arm off, will all of you he sporting a different tune? It seems that everyone is rooting for a clean fighter who doesn’t cheat to fall flat on her face, yet root for an obvious cheater and doper to succeed. Doesn’t make sense to me. I for one hope Ronda has a very successful career and ruins the career of Cyborg sending him to the men’s 145 division where he belongs.
