Is Jon Jones’ 2011 the Best Single Year in MMA History?

Posted on by Damon Martin

If UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones can defeat Lyoto Machida that will mark 4 victories, and three title fights in 2011.

Pretty remarkable 12-month period for a fighter whose only been doing MMA for the past 4 years.

The mark was set pretty high during Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua’s run through the Pride Grand Prix in 2005, but if Jon Jones wins on Saturday night will he have surpassed that.

Will 2011 go down as the greatest year for any fighter in MMA history?

See what UFC President Dana White had to say about it:

“The mark was set pretty high during Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua’s run through the Pride Grand Prix in 2005, but if Jon Jones wins on Saturday night will he have surpassed that.”

I’m not one to correct peoples grammar, but I believe the author meant this as a question. Meaning it would have a question mark instead of a period. Not trying to be picky, but it reads differently with a period. Seems more like a statement of fact.

(whether I’m right or wrong, can mmaweekly delete this post whenever they read it please?)

In 2011 he made short work of a previously undefeated Ryan Bader, absolutely destroyed Mauricio Rua and had his way with Quinton Jackson. Would be a pretty impressive if he manages to dispatch with Machida in similar fashion.

He’s had an impressive run this year, that’s for sure. Greatest single year ever? Only time will tell.

If he wins I would have to say absolutely. It does seem like the hype is starting to go to his head though. That could cause problems in the future. As well as one hell of a long way down if/when he does lose.
