Invicta FC LogoSaturday night’s Invicta FC 6 in Kansas City toppled the promotion’s championship dominoes.

Several fighters controlled their destinies at Invicta FC 6, including Claudia Gadelha and Leslie Smith.

Gadelha stepped up on short notice to fight Ayaka Hamasaki on Saturday night, stepping in for injured strawweight champion Carla Esparza.

It was a risky fight for Jewels 115-pound champion Hamasaki, who lost the bout via TKO stoppage to Gadelha. Not only did Hamasaki suffer the first defeat of her career, she also lost her title shot.

With the victory, Gadelha earned the shot at Esparza when the champion returns from a knee injury suffered in training.

With her unanimous decision victory over Jennifer Maia, Leslie Smith also earned title shot. She is now the top contender to Barb Honchak’s 125-pound flyweight title.

Former atomweight champion Jessica Penne defeated Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc with a late first-round submission. She is just one fight removed from losing the 105-pound championship to Michelle Waterson, but Invicta president Shannon Knapp indicated it was more likely that Waterson would put her belt on the line against someone else before Penne gets another crack at the title.

No date or location was given for Carla Esparza vs. Claudia Gadelha or for Barb Honchak vs. Leslie Smith.

Former Strikeforce champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino captured the inaugural Invicta FC featherweight championship by defeating Marloes Coenen at Invicta FC 6.
