Injury Nixes Bobby Green for UFC San Diego Co-Main Event

June 17, 2015

An undisclosed training injury has forced Bobby Green out of the UFC Fight Night 71 co-main event. He had been slated to face Al Iaquinta on the San Diego-based fight card.

Green’s removal was first reported by MMAFighting.com.

Iaquinta told MMAFighting that he’d “rather be drunk at Jones Beach, but I’m still training for TBD,” adding that fighters like Gilbert Melendez, Dustin Poirier or Efrain Escudero would be good replacements. Melendez is likely out of the picture, however, as he was placed on a 30-day medical suspension following a loss to Eddie Alvarez at UFC 188 on Saturday night.

The UFC has yet to reveal whether it will try to keep Iaquinta on the card or perhaps push him back to a later event.

Bobby GreenThere had been momentum building between Green and Iaquinta, as each took shots at the other recently via social media.

Iaquinta (12-3-1) has been riding a hot streak of late, winning his last four bouts, including victories over Jorge Masvidal, Joe Lauzon, Ross Pearson, and Rodrigo Damm.

Green (23-6), meanwhile, was hoping to bounce back from a November loss to Edson Barboza. The loss to Barboza ended and eight-fight winning streak, and put a halt to Green’s run towards a title shot.

UFC Fight Night 71 is headlined by a heavyweight non-title fight between Frank Mir and Todd Duffee at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
