Impressive Submission Aside, Erick Silva Says “It’s Still Too Soon” for Shot at Georges St-Pierre

Erick SilvaErick Silva’s performance at UFC on Fuel TV 10 on Saturday night was extremely impressive.

In little more than a minute, he stuffed a Jason High takedown attempt, took his back, and finished the fight with an armbar.

But as impressive as his victory was, Silva believes that throwing his name into the mix for a shot at UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is premature.

“I think it’s still too soon,” he said at the post-fight press conference in Fortaleza, Brazil. “I’m not at all worried about the title belt right now. All I want to do is do my work.

“I’m just going to wait for the UFC to schedule my next fight, and when they do, I’m going to focus on it.”

Silva debuted in the Octagon as one of the more highly touted Brazilian prospects in recent memory, bringing with him a 12-1 professional record.

He won his first UFC bout by way of knockout, but stumbled in his sophomore effort. It appeared Silva was en route to a TKO stoppage, but was instead disqualified in his fight against Carlo Prater for illegal blows to the back of the head.

He followed that fight with a submission of Charlie Brenneman before losing a unanimous decision to Jon Fitch.

The victory over High put him back on track, but Silva would be just fine continuing to build on his efforts before he is blinded by shiny gold belts.

“If I could do 20 fights before the belt, I would,” he declared.

“When I go for the belt, I want to have it around my waist. So I want to have a lot of experience. But (fighting for the title) is not at all part of my plans right now.”

Gsp is the greatest ever. Weidman will be too after he destroys silva and ragdolls him

    • Bryan King

Let’s wait til Weidman has his first title fight before predicting he’ll be GOAT. Talk about jumping the gun.

      • Ian Price

Not disagreeing with you, but I am hoping for a changing of the guard at FW, LW, WW, or LHW

  • Chase Brian Beebe

fans and media have short term memory if they’re already talking about title shots

  • Advance*

He’s on a 1 fight win streak. Why is this even a question?

  • JDMMA

damn right, it is,,,, he just lost to Jon Fitch,,,, who no longer with UFC

  • julian moran

    Agree.

Who is Jason High? He must be one hell of a fighter! Silva gets finished by Fitch (who since got booted by the UFC), then beats High….. and someone is talking GSP??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

    • Lucas Freire

Fitch wasn’t released because he’s a bad fighter, he was released because he’s a boring fighter.
In fact I think Fitch has top5 material, and just like Koscheck, is going through a low point on his carreer.

When did Silva get finished by Fitch? LOL

Erick Silva is an excellent exciting prospect. His only apparent weakness is against top wrestlers w/ excellent sub defense who can block subs and control him on the ground.

Therefore… GSP would be a rough match for him.

Fitch is the only top 10 fighter that Erick has fought, and i think it’s time to only give him that level of fighters to really test him b/c he’s shown he’s clearly above the guys outside of the top 10.

Great match-up would be a Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz, or Koscheck.

Of course it’s too soon for a title shot. Who did he beat?
Besides , I don’t get all this talking about him being a huge young prospect , he is 29 , he is actually in his prime.
