Cris "Cyborg" SantosThe UFC will officially introduce the women’s division at UFC 157 when champion Ronda Rousey meets Liz Carmouche in the main event on Feb 23.

Of course the first name on anyone’s mind when Rousey is mentioned is the potential mega-fight against former Strikeforce champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos, and while it won’t be her first fight in the UFC, that may very well be her next challenge after Carmouche.

If Rousey is successful in her first fight in the UFC, it’s like the Brazilian will be her second test in the Octagon.

“That was obviously the fight that we wanted to make, we wanted to do that at 135lbs, and we worked hard to make that fight. I believe this fight will happen, then I truly believe the next one will be the Cyborg fight,” said UFC President Dana White on Thursday.

Cyborg has stated on numerous occasions in the past that there’s no way she could make the weight cut down to 135lbs. When she fought in Strikeforce, Santos competed at 145lbs, and even that was sometimes a rough weight cut.

But now it appears she will make the move down to bantamweight, it’s just a matter of taking the time to do it in a healthy way and then she can get the match-up against Rousey.

“(The Cyborg fight) is going to happen eventually, I can’t make these girls fight me when I want them to fight me, and I’ve got a lot of respect for Liz. She’s the only one that stepped up and said she wanted this fight right now, and it speaks a lot to her,” Rousey said about the fight.

“When other girls come around and they actually want to come to the big show, they know where I’m at.”

Rousey says she’s never doubted for a second that Cyborg could make the cut down to bantamweight, it just took her some time to come to the same realization.

“I know she can make 135, and so does she,” said Rousey. “It just takes her a little bit a while to realize that this is the only option that she has, and it took her a little bit of a while because I don’t think she’s not that bright. When she does think about it, I’m logically the only fight that makes sense.”

Cyborg is currently at home in Brazil, and still serving out the final weeks of her one-year suspension handed down after she tested positive for performance enhancing drugs after her last bout in Strikeforce. She will be eligible to return to action in late December once she clears any hurdles from the athletic commissions.

At that point, it’s likely Santos will negotiate and sign a deal with the UFC and hopefully face Ronda Rousey in 2013.

My dream come true. Women in MMA and Criz getting Rhonda a fighter as skilled and tough like herself Criz..

    • macgrubber

watching 2 nasty women who have no idea how to fight is a dream come true for you? thats sad broseph

      • annmariastat

An Olympic medal, world championship silver, junior world gold, four world cup gold medals – and Ronda does not know how to fight? What exactly are YOUR qualifications again?

        • Anthony Lopez

He sits around and judges people who do this for a living. Aren’t those the most impressive qualifications out there? He’s probably one of the idiots who say the flyweights don’t belong in the UFC, even though any of them could choke out or knock him out in under a minute

          • macgrubber

If this was a judo competition then ya it would be but its not. Put her in a boxing ring against some1 half decent and she would be KO in less than 3 rds because she doesnt know how to fight. And flyweights dont belong in the UFC. If your a man and weigh under 155 then ur not a real man.

        • macgrubber

and what did she win those medals in…fighting? No it was some crap like judo. So your telling me that because she knows JUDO she knows how to fight. That is the dumbest thing i have ever herd judo is crap when it comes to fighting. Her standup is worse than Jake Shields which actually hurts me to watch. So bro just because she was in the olympics means nothing.

I like Ronda but this quote is classically dumb.

“and it took her a little bit of a while because I don’t think she’s not that bright.”

    • annmariastat

I think it is more likely a typo than an accurate quote.

I think that Dana is pushing the woman division too much. And yes I mean WOMAN since Rousey until today was the ONLY female under UFC contract. I enjoy WMMA fights…but I think making her first fight in the UFC a main event is pushing it a bit.

I think just due to the prejudice of alot of MMA fans against WMMA, this PPV wont sell well. Unless they stack the crap out of the rest of the card. Which I think they will do just so Dana can give all the kudo’s to Rousey. And on the flip side, if the PPV tanks he will blame it on all the other fighters not putting on a good show.

I like Ronda, and I think she’s very talented and promising. I also liked Gina, who is bigger, and has much better standup than Ronda, and got routed by Cyborg. Ronda may be biting off more than she can chew. She needs better standup, had better be ready mentally for getting punched in the face A LOT, and had better get Cyborg to the ground fast. JMHO…

  • drkdisciple

Once Ronda gets destroyed by cyborg no one will give a rats ass about the woman’s division. But on a positive note DRAnnMaria will probably have a new patient!

Of course cyborg can make weight cut now that she’s off steroids. She’s losing that muscle and bloat from the drugs and she won’t be the same fighter. Rousey will arm bar herfirst round.
It would be more competitive if she was the muscled steroid freak that fought Gina.

    • O.T.

I don’t like the idea of Cyborg coming down in weight. It may tax her body too much and she will gas out a lot sooner. Her stamina and power will suffer. Performance Enhancing Drugs(PED’s) gives you a false sense of confidence. I know Cyborg is highly skilled but without those PED’s I think a fight between these two will be more of a disappointment for us Cyborg fans than we could expect.

first, i dont really wanna see her headlining an event strait off the bat especially against somebody not name cyborg and he is prolly goin a bit to quick here once that fight is done will there still be interest an the womens division anymore?
