Press Release

Last July, Freedom Fight Productions created one of Canada’s most exciting nights of MMA action while breaking new ground in terms of mainstream exposure. In doing so, Freedom Fight 2005 became the most viewed MMA event from Canada and left fans from coast to coast asking for more. Meanwhile in Montreal, the foundation was set for APEX to be the venue for some of the best talent in the world to meet. On January 14, 2006, two of the best matchmakers in the country, Alex Caporicci (APEX) and Pete Rodley (Freedom Fight Productions owner) put their minds together to create another Olympic themed event WITH A TWIST!

Not only will fans get to see Team Canada attempt to redeem itself after its loss on July 9th, but they will also get to witness several Quebec vs. Ontario bouts to stir the pot even further. You will see veterans from Freedom Fights 2005 as well as APEX veterans in a combination of MMA team bouts and superfights as well as 2 explosive kickboxing fights.

“Working with Alex has always been a real treat for me. He has a great head for matchmaking and we work very well together on the business side of things. Together I feel that I can bring even more to the table than my first Freedom event in regards to new exciting matches and developing new talent,” said Pete Rodley.

“I can’t ask for anything more than to be working with Pete. He is a true professional in every definition of the word and is once again bringing Canada some great entertainment. We are really looking forward to combining APEX’s efforts with a MMA pioneer like Pete.” continued Alex Caporicci.

In the main event we will see a clash of two successful Freedom Fight 2005 warriors as Team Quests Matt Horwich goes head to head with Quebec’s Stephan Potvin. Potvin has been taking on the worlds best fighters for many years and made no exception last July when he landed a devastating axe kick to UFC vet Tyrone Roberts which caused the ringside physician to call a halt to the fight. Potvin also hold a victory over UFC vets Joe Doerksen, Ron Jhun and is considered one of the most underrated fighters in Canada. He will be stepping up against APEX and Freedom Fight veteran Matt Horwich who has defeated Antony Rea, Krystof Sosynski and Jason MacDonald in his three appearances in Canada. Known for his unique personality and ability to weather a storm prior to tapping out his opponent, Team Quest’s Horwich is a tough match-up for anyone and a great mainstay of the American team.

One of the worlds most revered grapplers and undefeated MMA fighter will make his APEX and Freedom Fight debut on January 14th in Hull. Taking his place on Team Canada is none other than Wagnney Fabianno who will be facing off against the APEX veteran Ryan Ackerman from Milwaukee. Ackerman has traveled around the world showing the heart and skill to be considered as one of the top fighters in the featherweight division. With a recent win over Freedom Fight 2005 winner Richard “Monkey” Nancoo, Ackerman is coming to Canada with bad intentions for Fabianno.

Ronin MMA Academy and local favorite Farmer Brown made the opening bout of “Freedom Fight 2005″ a thrill for the fans in attendance and a nightmare for Ricardeau Francois. After weathering the storm, Farmer did what UFC veterans Pat Cote and Wes Sims could not, put the six foot, seven inch, Quebec giant to sleep. Farmer will be stepping into the ring against NAGA veteran and undefeated MMA fighter John Clarke who is looking to end the local favorite’s winning streak.

After an impressive showing against UFC Veteran Steve Berger at the last APEX event, it was made a priority by APEX to make sure that Nuri Shakir returned to their ring. Shakir comes back representing Team USA in Freedom Fight against a soon to be named Canadian opponent.

Ontario’s Claude Patrick has been making APEX matchmaker Alex Caporicci’s life very difficult as of late. After Patrick’s series of brutal displays there are not many people willing to step up and face the young phenom. Patrick is signed to make his prime time debut in Hull and the Freedom/APEX team is waiting for the signature of an American phenom in the making to complete this fight.

The details of the remaining team bouts will be announced shortly.

In a clash of BAD BOYS we will see a war between Ontario fighting legend Pain Peters and Quebec’s Martin “The Hammer” Grandmont. Pain is the man who represented MMA and destroyed pro boxer Stephane Ouelett at UCC 7 while catapulting his popularity higher than ever. On January 14th he faces a man far more dangerous than Ouelett in Grandmont. Grandmont is considered one of Quebec’s most feared kickboxers and is looking to make the popular Pain rest in peace. Grandmont is coming off a devastating kickboxing clinic against Eric Lacelle is his last APEX fight.

In a special Kickboxing fight, Ontario’s Wojtek “Kazz” Kaszowski returns after an explosive pit bull attack at APEX in September. Negotiations are still ongoing for the opponent of who many experts are considering the future of heavyweight kickboxing in Canada.

Also, look for the return to the ring of Ottawa’s own Sean Ragnitz, Serge Lafond, Randy Newell, Team Bushido’s Nabil Khatib, Mike Hong and plenty of other top up and coming Canadian fighters to round off the undercard.

This historic event will take place at the beautiful Palais Des Congres in Hull, Quebec. This spectacular venue is located only meters from Hull’s main transit depot, 2 blocks from the event hotel and 5 minutes from Ottawa’s downtown core. This venue is easily accessible from Hull, Ottawa, Montreal and anywhere that fight fans will be traveling from.

Look for details on the pre event festivities to be made public in the coming weeks.
