Strikeforce on Friday confirmed the mixed martial arts debut of former National Football League (NFL) running back and Olympian Herschel Walker. He will fight on the promotion’s Jan. 30 event in Sunrise, Fla.
Nick Diaz and women’s champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos will co-headline the event, which will be broadcast on Showtime.
There were no opponents named for any of the fighters, although Santos is widely expected to face Marloes Coenen for her first title defense.
Walker is a multi-faceted competitor that has excelled in nearly every one of his athletic endeavors. He won the Heisman Trophy as the top player in college football in 1982, is a two-time Pro Bowl player in the NFL, finished in seventh place in the 1992 Winter Olympics in the two-man bobsled competition, and holds a fifth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
He recently entered a 12-week training camp at San Jose, Calif.-based American Kickboxing Academy, working alongside fighters such as Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson, Cung Le, Jon Fitch, Mike Swick, Josh Koscheck, and several other top fighters.
