Herb DeanReferee Herb Dean will control the cage when Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman square off for Silva’s UFC middleweight championship.

Nevada State Athletic Commission officials on Friday assigned Dean as the referee for the bout. They also named Adalaide Byrd, Marcos Rosales and Patricia Morse Jarman as the fight’s judges.

Silva and Weidman headline UFC 162, which takes place on July 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

UFC president Dana White recently took aim at referee Steve Mazzagatti, heavily criticizing the official’s actions in the World Series of Fighting 3 main event between Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman. His criticism of Mazzagatti was followed by concern that his comments might be met with retaliation from the commission.

White explained that he felt Mazzagatti was far too slow in responding to Burkman choking Fitch unconscious, and that it was the latest in a series of missteps by the veteran referee.

“The Nevada State Athletic Commission is going to keep this (expletive) guy around until he seriously hurt somebody,” said White. “That guy is dangerous.  It’s disgusting.  At what point do you realize that this guy is an incompetent fool and he’s going to hurt somebody.

“Now because I said this, the Nevada State Athletic Commission will give him the Silva fight (at UFC 162).”

Mazzagatti, however, will not officiate the Silva vs. Weidman fight.

this is about the only time who is reffing should be in an article, great news.

  • zztoppppp

Herb Dean should be reffing every main event.

Herb has f***** up plenty of matches (Fedor vs Hendo).

fedor went limp and if you say otherwise you just cant see clearly thru your fandom. but just in case you may want to rewatch that fight.

      • With the Fedor vs Hendo fight, it was a flash knockout. In Herbs defense, Fedor went limp but did come back quickly but he was in a bad position against a very dangerous guy, so his job was done well by looking out for Fedor and not letting Hendo stay on top with Fedor face down. The only time I remember him messing up was with Thailes Leites and Nate Marquardt with the back of the head point deduction.

I agree. That point deduction in the Leites fight was a joke, but other than that, I think Herb is a great ref. All good refs have had a few stops that maybe could have gone a punch or two longer…that is the nature of the business. Herb lets guys work it out on the ground and in the clinch, but keeps the pace moving, and always keeps fighter safety in mind. Definitely the best ref, in my opinion.

          • I agree. Very good ref. Former competitor as well so he knows what’s really going on out there. Mistakes do happen, we’re all human. As much as I love the sport I could never want to be a ref and hold that responsibility of a fighters safety.
