A welterweight bout is in the works for the undercard of UFC 117 in Oakland as 2-time NCAA champion Johny Hendricks returns to action to face rising prospect Charlie Brenneman on the card.
The bout has been verbally agreed to by the fighters involved, although no bout agreements have been issued according to sources speaking to MMAWeekly.com on Thursday. The fight was originally reported by MMADieHards.com.
After winning two fights in the WEC, Hendricks (8-0) was moved over the UFC with the rest of the promotion’s welterweight division and since that time he’s picked up three more wins.
Starting with a lightning fast TKO over former “Ultimate Fighter” winner Amir Sadollah, Hendricks has gone on to win his last two fights by decision and hopes to keep the streak alive in Oakland.
A former champion of the reality show “Pros vs. Joes”, Charlie Brenneman (11-1) trains out of the AMA Fight Club in New Jersey along with fellow UFC pros Jim and Dan Miller, while also working alongside UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
An accomplished wrestler in his own right, Brenneman made his debut in the UFC in March with a unanimous decision over Jason High.
Once the fight is finalized it’s expected to be a part of the untelevised undercard for the show in Oakland that will feature a main event pitting Anderson Silva against Chael Sonnen in a middleweight title fight.
