With Robbie Lawler and Johny Hendricks expected to fight in a trilogy bout later this year, Hector Lombard vs. Rory MacDonald is the fight that nearly everyone thought made sense. Lombard certainly thought so after his last fight, and evidently, the UFC thinks so as well.

Lombard and MacDonald have verbally agreed to fight each other at UFC 186 on April 26 in Montreal. VendettaFighter.com first reported that the fight was in the works. Lombard later confirmed the bout to MMAFighting.com.

Hector-Lombard-UFC-on-FX-6_53022-750Lombard (35-4-1, 1 NC) is fresh off of unanimous decision victory over Josh Burkman at UFC 182 in Las Vegas. It was his third consecutive win since dropping down to welterweight, following wins over Jake Shields and Nate Marquardt. He’s largely considered one of the top contenders for a title shot after MacDonald, and now he has the opportunity to jump the line.

MacDonald (18-2) is also on a three-fight winning streak, but he hasn’t fought since defeating former Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine in October. His only loss in his last nine bouts was a split-decision loss to Lawler, the current champion.

He was expected to get the next title shot after defeating Saffiedine, but Lawler and Hendricks’ December battle left UFC officials wanting to complete the trilogy first.

MacDonald is going to utilize movement and his reach advantage to jab the shit out of him!

Let`s see what Hector is really made of. Rory will be a challenge and my personal favorite.

  • Matte

Unfair for Rory imo but it is gonna be a long night for Lombard.

  • Darin

Well, I guess if they’re going to have Hendricks fight the same fight 3 times in a row, this match is what they’re left with. I’ll be looking forward to this one more that Hendricks/Lawler 6, or whatever it is.

    • Sarge

I’m glad lawler won the belt but just not the way he did it in. Hopefully the 3rd fight will be the last of the Hendricks vs lawler saga.

I would be interest in a Hendrick vs Lawler just not right now… I don’t know why the UFC make this fight so soon and I just hope that Hendrix will not use the same strategy.

        • Sarge

It’s obvious the reason why it’s being made so soon is both men have a win over each other, both fights were razor close and I don’t think everyone was happy with their last performance so better having the rubber match while their battles are still fresh in mind.

I get that thank you… (I fallow mma so you don’t need to point out the obvious) I just meant that to me it’s not a good reason. It’s unfair for the other fighter and I don’t think it’s what the fan want to see. I would prefer Lawler vs McDonld 2 and Hendrix vs Lombard.

    Awesome fight!

I don’t see Lombard coming out victorious in this one. Rory will move around, use the jab and not take much damage.

  • battle ready

This will be a good fight. No matter who wins, the victor has definitely earned a title shot. Rory is a test for Lombard’s cardio. Lombard is a test for Rory’s striking.

  • UfcUltimateFloorCuddling

I can see it now! It will be a boring fight. Lombard will engage but won’t strike first. Rory would engage with attacking then runs away. I can’t see Rory taking lombard down.. I see rory wanting to control the distance. Lombard want to maul him. This is my prediction.. i doubt i’ll be right. Interesting match none the less.

Lombard will have a gas tank for about 2 rounds then Rory will be able to do a lot more.

Hector Lombard once followed me on Twitter back when I tested out the human pecking order phenomenon. Must have been a mistake as 2 months later he removed me. Yes, more proof of how anybody even remotely famous thumbs their noses at commoners.

  • mmafanguy

I don’t know if it’s going to be a good fight, but that a fight that make sense to me.

If Rory beats Lombard then will he be 4 fights away from a title shot or 5? Probably a Rory/Woodley 2. Then a Rory will have to face Royce Gracie. Then once he wins that they will do a super fight with Weidman. After that one expect a fight with Frank Mir. THEN he might get a shot.
