Tonight in Stockton, California Steve Heath makes his long awaited return to MMA after a three-year hiatus to take on local favorite Phil “The Pain” Collins at Warrior’s Cup: The Takeover. The co-main event features Shooto veteran Kenichiro Togashi taking on King of the Cage veteran Shawn Bias. Local up and coming fighters round out the rest of the card.
In the main event, Cesar Gracie fighter Steve Heath takes on local favorite Phil “The Pain” Collins. Heath has an 8-4 record in MMA and trains out of Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with Nick Diaz. Collins has a 4-2 record in MMA and trains out of Oakdale MMA in Northern California. Heath last fought three years ago, losing to Yuki Kondo by submission at Pancrase: Brave 3. Collins is coming off a submission loss to Nate Loughran at CCFC: Judgment Day.
Heath is widely known by MMA fans for his exciting battle with UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell back in 2000, where Heath traded blow-for-blow until getting knocked out. It has been three years since Heath last fought as he looks to get back into MMA now that its becoming popular and demand for good fighters is at an all time high. Collins is a local fighter, but has come up short against tougher competition and this fight should be no different.
The other fight of interest on the card is a battle of lightweights as Shooto veteran Kenichiro Togashi takes on KOTC veteran Shawn Bias. Togashi has a 6-4-4 record in MMA and trains out of Paraestra Hiroshima in Japan. Shawn Bias has a 10-3 record in MMA and trains out of Team Fury in Northern California. Togashi is coming off a draw with Koutetsu Boku at Shooto: Back to our Roots. Bias is coming off a submission victory over Giovanni Encarnacion at PFC 2: Fast and Furious.
Togashi has fought some of the best lightweights in the world like Joachim Hansen, Mitsuhiro Ishida and Koutetsu Boku, holding his own with all three fighters. Togashi is an excellent boxer and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Bias is an excellent fighter with a lot of upside, but he normally fights at featherweight and will moving up in weight for this fight. This could easily be the “Fight of the Night.” It’s surely a special treat to see a great fighter like Togashi in the United States.
