A lightweight bout is in the works that will see Melvin Guillard get back in action in against former top 155lb contender Yves Edwards at an as of yet unannounced event tentatively planned for January 22.
The news of the bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the match-up on Thursday, and initially reported by MMAJunkie.com.
The date and the location of the fight are the only things not yet determined at this point. According to sources, the UFC had planned on doing an event between UFC 125 on New Year’s Day and UFC 126 which takes place Super Bowl weekend. This event seems to be the landing spot, but it will end up being either a UFC Fight Night or possibly UFC on Versus, but nothing is official at this point.
The other caveat to throw into the mix is where the fight will take place which is also yet to be determined at this point.
Returning in January, Melvin Guillard (26-8-2) seems to have turned a corner in his MMA career since moving to New Mexico to work with Greg Jackson and his team. Going 3-0 in his last three fights, Guillard has mixed technique and game planning with his already dangerous stand-up to become a more complete fighter.
He’ll try to show that off again as he faces another veteran of the Octagon in Yves Edwards (39-16-1) who made his return to the UFC in September on short notice, and picked up a win over John Gunderson. At 5-1 over his last six fights, Edwards has been working with American Top Team as well as some other camps to get him ready, and he’ll put the formula together once again as he gets ready for a showdown with Guillard in January.
