UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey successfully defended her belt against Sara McMann at UFC 170 recently. The victory, however, wasn’t without some controversy.

Rousey dropped McMann with a knee strike to the liver, following with several punches. The fight was stopped shortly thereafter.

The controversy erupted when detractors felt that referee Herb Dean stopped the bout prematurely, saying that McMann was making moves to protect and recover at the time of the stoppage.

Time for the Gracie’s to step in and provide an in-depth breakdown of Rousey’s victory, and Dean’s stoppage.

From a selfish perspective, I wanted more. From a professional perspective, I can’t fault Herb Dean. He saw an incapcitated, non defending fighter taking blows to the head, so he stepped in for the safety of the fighter. He had no way of knowing Mcmann would pop up immediately after.

Stoppage was perfect. Even if Herb let her stand up – she would go back again and just take more damage. Good job, Herb!

You must intelligently defend yourself, it’s the rules… Well done Herb.
